Position Summary:
The Paramedic provides advanced life support (ALS) emergency medical care and patient transport services as part of the Department’s EMS system. This position responds to medical emergencies, performs patient assessment and treatment, and delivers care in accordance with state licensure and Medical Director protocols. Work is performed in physically demanding and high-stress environments, including patient homes, roadways, healthcare facilities, and other emergency scenes. The Paramedic reports to the assigned Lieutenant or Captain and is responsible for maintaining clinical competency, operational readiness, and professional conduct.

This position is designated as essential to the continued delivery of emergency services. The Paramedic is required to remain on duty or report to duty during emergencies, disasters, or other critical incidents, including those occurring during or following evacuation orders. Employees in this position must remain available for scheduled shifts and recall to duty unless specifically released by the Fire Chief (or designee) or authorized City official. This requirement applies to natural disasters, man-made incidents, civil disturbances, and other emergencies affecting the City. The Paramedic must plan accordingly to ensure availability during such events. Failure to comply with essential duty requirements may result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination.
Physical Demands/Working Conditions:
Work is performed in ambulance, station, and emergency scene environments. The position requires frequent standing, walking, bending, lifting, and carrying patients and equipment. The Paramedic must be able to lift and move patients with assistance, perform CPR, and operate in adverse weather conditions. The position may involve exposure to infectious diseases, bodily fluids, traffic hazards, and stressful emergency situations. The employee must maintain medical fitness standards consistent with departmental policy.
