Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Social Work, Pre-Law/Social Science or an equivalent law related field.
  • Associate degree in an accredited Paralegal Program, Criminal Justice or other social science field -AND- one year of experience as a Paralegal.
  • Paralegal Certification -AND- two years' experience as a secretary in a legal setting.
  • Passing score on Genesee County Legal Assistant Competency Exam -AND- three years' experience in a Prosecuting Attorney's office or Law Enforcement Office (state, local or federal).
  • Five years' experience as a Paralegal, Judicial Secretary or Secretary in a legal setting.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares various legal documents necessary to the criminal justice process.
  • Conveys information through the neglect-abuse, child support, or civil processes.
  • Performs legal research using Westlaw and drafting assignments as required.
  • Drafting and formatting the table of authorities in briefs and checking citations.
  • Assists attorneys in the courtroom, including gathering witnesses and liaising with law enforcement.
  • In civil cases, conducts personal interviews with clients and potential clients.
  • Drafts plea agreements and recommends dispositions for assigned cases.
  • Tracks cases and performs necessary follow-up assignments.
  • Ensures sentence terms are properly requested, ordered, and entered; liaises with Probation Department.
  • Ensures witness lists and subpoenas are accurate and properly served.
  • Coordinates with DHHS relative to referrals and compliance with procedures.
  • Liaises with clerks of court regarding matters to be filed and information exchange.

Starting Pay: $21.5635 Hourly ($44,852)

Step A: $23.5611 Hourly ($49,007)

Step B: $27.0433 Hourly ($56,250)

Step E: $29.2452 Hourly ($60,830)

JOB SUMMARY

Performs responsible para-professional tasks as assigned by assistant prosecuting attorneys; research legal questions, prepares initial orders and drafts petitions, motions, complaints, answers and investigative subpoenas; attends court hearings, serves as the extradition point of contact for the office; processes forfeitures and responds to mail inquiries; works under general supervision; performs related duties as required.

Essential Job Duties And Functions

  • Assists attorneys in the courtroom, including gathering witnesses, liaising with law enforcement, review of pleadings, correspondence and other information required.
  • In civil cases- Conducts personal, detailed interviews with clients and potential clients.
  • Compiles and reviews information to draft plea agreements and/or make recommendations for disposition of assigned cases.
  • Track cases and performs necessary follow up assignments.
  • Ensures the terms of sentence are properly requested, ordered and entered and liaises with Probation Department.
  • Ensures that witness list are correct and subpoenas are prepared and that they are properly served in compliance with court rules.
  • Coordinates with DHHS relative to referrals to this office and ensures compliance with procedure.
  • Liaises with various clerks of court relative to matters to be filed and information to be exchanged.
