Job summary

Iowa Department of Revenue invites applications for a Paralegal to support the Property Assessment Appeals Board. The role includes legal research, document review, and records management, while drafting communications and preparing case files for hearings.

You will attend hearings, record minutes, and act as the main point of contact with auditors, attorneys, and taxpayers to clarify issues related to property assessment appeals. A paralegal program or equivalent experience is required.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited paralegal program or equivalent experience.
  • Two years of paralegal or similar support work under an attorney.
  • Eligibility to work in Iowa and successful background checks are required.

Responsibilities

  • Support attorneys with legal research and document review tasks.
  • Maintain and process case files; respond to requests and collect records.
  • Assist in drafting and proofreading various communications.
  • Attend hearings and record minutes for file accuracy.
  • Serve as primary contact with auditors, attorneys, and taxpayers for clarification on appeals.

Job description

The Iowa Department of Revenue Property Assessment Appeals Board (PAAB) is seeking a Paralegal.

PAAB hears appeals of property assessments and equalization orders following decisions from local boards of review. PAAB does not value property or independently investigate assessments. PAAB is not part of your local assessor's office or board of review.

In this position you will:

  • Work with attorneys to perform legal research and assist with duties such as document review and records collection
  • Provide support by maintaining and processing records, responding to requests, preparing case files as needed
  • Assist in drafting and proofing a variety of communications
  • Attend hearings and record minutes
  • Act as the primary point of contact with auditors, attorneys, and taxpayers to provide clarification on issues related to property assessment appeals

Graduation from an accredited paralegal program;

OR

Two years of full-time work experience as a paralegal or in a similar support capacity under the supervision of a practicing attorney.
