Basic Function

Under the direction of the assigned supervisor, assist a certificated teacher in providing instruction to individuals or small groups of students in an assigned educational program; assist children with meeting the goals and objectives of their Individualized Education Plan (IEP); attend to students’ physical and health needs; monitor and report student progress; perform a variety of clerical duties related to classroom activities and classroom management. Employees in these positions are primarily responsible for attendant physical duties to enable students with disabilities to have equal educational opportunities and assist the classroom teacher in creating and maintaining engaging academic environments.

This position may be used as a step toward further professional development opportunities as an Instructional Support Specialist and/or certificated position.

Specialized Skills

• Deaf and Hard of Hearing Para‑Educator: Provide instruction using a signing system such as ASL, PSE, MCE, and appropriate facial expressions.
• Visual Impairment Para‑Educator: Read and demonstrate Braille; operate audio, Braille, and related equipment; assist students in moving through the school environment.

Essential Functions

• Assist a certificated teacher in providing instruction in Pre‑K through Young Adult programs, including Special Day Classes and other special education settings.
• Read IEP goals to support instruction and maximize student progress.
• Communicate with teachers, parents, and other staff to evaluate progress and implement IEP objectives.
• Implement behavior strategies to maintain a safe learning environment.
• Assist students with personal hygiene tasks such as washing, toileting, diapering, dressing, and grooming.
• Assist with transportation of students, including positioning, loading/unloading, and ensuring safe use of wheelchairs and other equipment.
• Provide basic first aid, medical support, and document health and safety incidents.
• Assist in monitoring lunchroom activities, mealtime procedures, and positive reinforcement plans.
• Maintain classroom and school facilities; set up work areas and distribute materials.
• Collect and record data, score tests, and prepare reports for instructional purposes.
• Work with a team of professionals to improve special education programs.
• Follow all district policies, codes of conduct, and confidentiality requirements.
• Participate in staff meetings, professional development, and in‑service training.
• Perform related duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent; an Associate’s degree or higher, 48 or more college units, or passing score on the CBEST, ParaPro, or CODESP and relevant training.
• One year of experience working with children of various age levels in a classroom setting and experience attending to students with physical needs preferred.
• Valid First Aid and CPR certificates.
• Willingness to complete at least 15 hours of additional training, including mandated reporter training.
• Valid California Driver’s License (if required for transportation duties).
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills demonstrated in interviews, writing samples, or performance‑based assessments.

Working Conditions

Environment: Office, diverse school site, classroom environments, and driving a vehicle as required. Fast-paced work with constant interruptions.

Physical Requirements: Ability to sit or stand for extended periods, lift and carry up to 50 pounds (with assistance for heavier items), navigate uneven terrain, and perform tasks requiring dexterity and hearing.
