Overview
ParaEducator (School Aide)/ Elementary Support position at Camelot Elementary. Supervises and monitors students across the school day with specific oversight of playground, crosswalk, and breakfast/lunch areas. Under the direction of a supervising teacher, assists with basic skills development for students, including those with identified disabilities. Students typically work in small groups or individually within the regular classroom or in a dedicated learning area.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Supervise and monitor students throughout the school day in accordance with school and district policies.
- Communicate concerns to the principal regarding safety violations or lack of student/driver cooperation.
- Help students problem solve and resolve conflicts; report safety hazards to the main office for action.
- Assist with opening food items, wiping spills, and cleaning student areas; follow protocol when assisting an injured student.
- Establish an environment that encourages appropriate behavior and redirect student behaviors as needed.
- Tutor individuals and/or groups in specific skills as directed by the teacher.
- Assist the teacher in administering instructional and behavioral programs.
- Plan daily/weekly with teachers and staff serving the same students; communicate with building/district staff and parents as needed.
- Inform the supervising teacher of any observed problems or information regarding individual students.
- Perform instructional/tutorial assignments and maintain records as directed by the supervising teacher.
- Interact positively with students, parents, and staff; provide positive reinforcement throughout the day.
- Assist with room maintenance and inventory of books and equipment; assist with health-related procedures as assigned.
Other Responsibilities
- Perform instructional clerical tasks.
- Work collaboratively with district staff and promote teamwork with co-workers.
- Assist substitute teacher with relevant classroom information.
Required Qualifications
Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma or Equivalent
- One of the following: AA degree; or High school diploma (or equivalent) plus 48 college-level semester credits or 72 college-level quarter credits; or High school diploma (or equivalent) and pass the state-approved paraeducator assessment test.
Additional Requirements: Proficient in basic spelling, math, and grammar; trained in reading instruction, remediation, and assessment.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working with students in grades K-5.
Condition of Employment
- Pass a criminal background check
- Complete the district’s Paraeducator Core Competency requirements
- Possess and maintain CPR/First Aid training (American Heart Association or American Red Cross)
- Complete FWPS district-approved Right Response training at the advanced level and maintain certification via annual recertification if assigned to a Resource Support position
- Work scheduled hours consistently

- Knowledge of IEPs; traffic and pedestrian safety procedures; diverse learning styles; English grammar and spelling; basic math; positive behavior interventions; Right Response and de-escalation techniques; school policies
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively; maintain good attendance; communicate effectively with staff, students, parents/guardians, and the public; demonstrate cultural competence and equity
- Ability to follow written and verbal directions with minimal supervision; maintain confidentiality; adapt to students with diverse emotional, academic, and social needs
Physical Demands
The job may require sitting, standing, walking, bending, lifting up to 50 lbs with assistance, and other activities typical of a school environment. Reasonable accommodations may be made for disability.
Work Conditions
Indoor and outdoor work in a school setting; moderate noise; potential exposure to infectious diseases; occasional exposure to challenging behavior.
Work Schedule and Reporting
This is a school-year assignment with hours and days varying by school. Reports to classroom teacher and/or department head and building principal; evaluated by building principal or designee.

Represents Public School Employees Union (PSE) SEIU Local 1948. Compensation is per the PSE Salary Schedule for Paraeducators.
