Job summary

BROOKLYN SCHOOLS is seeking a paraeducator to support students in grades PK-8. You will reinforce reading, language arts, mathematics, and computer instruction, both individually and in small groups, under supervision of licensed staff.

The role includes assisting with classroom preparations, documentation of student progress, behavior management, and supervision during lunch, bus, and other non-instructional times. Prior work with students with special needs is desirable.

Qualifications

  • Requires High School Diploma with ParaPro Assessment or an Associate's degree or higher.
  • Experience with special needs children is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Assist and guide students to reinforce reading, language arts, mathematics and computer instruction.
  • Work with students individually and in small groups to reinforce basic learning.
  • Assist professional staff and classroom preparations.
  • Maintain records documenting student learning and performance.
  • Support classroom behavior management and safety rules.
  • Supervise non-instructional areas (lunch, bus, playground, hallways, study hall).
  • Assist students with special needs to maximize inclusion and achievement.
  • Follow safety rules and procedures; may use PMT strategies after training.
  • Assist with personal care tasks as needed.

Job description

Position Purpose
  • Paraeducator working with students in grades PK-8, or as assigned
Essential Job Functions
  • Assists and guides students to reinforce reading, language arts, mathematics, computer instruction, and other skills.
  • Works with students individually and in small groups to reinforce basic learning and implement assigned programs.
  • Assists professional staff
  • Assists in classroom preparations and strategies for reinforcing instructional materials and skills according to individual student needs.
  • Assists with record-keeping procedures to document student learning and performance.
  • Assists with classroom behavioral management to minimize disruptions, ensure a safe and orderly classroom, and ensure students are on task.
  • Assists students in non-instructional areas, such as supervising the student lunch programs, bus duty, playground duty, corridor, study hall, and other related non-instructional areas.
  • Assists students with special needs in all aspects of classroom instruction to maximize inclusion, learning, achievement if IEP objectives, etc.
  • Follows all applicable safety rules, procedures and regulations governing the proper manner of assistance for all students, including those with disabilities or other special needs.
  • May include use of PMT strategies, following the completion of training.
  • Assist students with personal care (i.e. toileting, feeding ,positioning)
Additional Duties
  • Assist guidance, pupil services staff or building administration, as needed.
  • Perform any other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications Profile
  • Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge for successful performance would be qualifying. Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:
  • High School Diploma with Para Pro Assessment or Associates Degree or higher.
  • Prior experience working with special needs children is desirable.
