Job summary

Gulf Copper is seeking a skilled industrial painter for our Galveston, TX operations. The role involves painting ships and related structures, preparing surfaces, applying primers and finishes, and maintaining safety standards on site aboard vessels and facilities.

Experience in marine painting is preferred; a high school diploma or equivalent is required, with 1st/2nd class classifications based on experience. Excellent teamwork and adherence to safety policies are essential.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Industrial/marine painting experience preferred.
  • 1st Class: 3 years; 2nd Class: 1-3 years.

Responsibilities

  • Paint, stain, enamel or other finishes on ships and structures using brushes, spray guns or rollers.
  • Prepare surfaces by removing old finishes, grease, rust, scale and dirt.
  • Cover surfaces to protect areas during painting and apply primers or sealers.
  • Smooth surfaces with sandpaper or scrapers and follow specifications.
  • Read and follow technical manuals and work safely in elevated, confined spaces.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

This positionis responsible forthe following: Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Paint, stain, enamel, orother finishes toequipment, interior or exterior of ships, marina buildings, or other structures, using brushes, spray guns, or rollers.
  2. Prepare wood, fiberglass, and metal surfaces for painting by removing old finishes, grease, rust, scale, and dirt by stripping, sanding, wire brushing, burning, or using water or abrasive blasting.
  3. Cover surfaces with drop cloths or masking tape and paper to protect surfaces during painting.
  4. Smooth surfaces, using sandpaper, scrapers, brushes, steel wool, or sanding machines.
  5. Apply primers or sealers to prepare new surfaces, such as bare wood or metal, for finish coats per specifications.
  6. Cut stencils and brush or spray lettering on surfaces.
  7. Fill cracks, holes, or joints with caulk, putty, plaster,wood,or other fillers, using caulking guns or putty knives.
  8. Wash and treat surfaces with oil, turpentine, mildew remover, or other preparations, and sand rough spots to ensure that finishes will adhere properly.
  9. May berequiredto remove fixtures such,doorknobs, lamps, or electric switch covers prior to painting.
Required Education & Experience:
  1. High School Diploma and/or one year certificate from college or technical school preferred.
  2. Industrial and/or marine painting experience preferred:
  • 1st Class:Minimum of3years
  • 2nd Class: Minimum of1-3 years
Working Conditions:
  1. Some climbing (100 feet) and lifting (50 lbs.) involved.
  2. Traverse gangways and scaffolding at varying heights while wearing fall prevention equipment.
  3. Working with hot and sometimes hazardous materials.
  4. Aboard ships, both on and offshore as well as confined spaces.
  5. Must be able to stand andoperateequipmentup to four continuous hours.
  6. The work requiresextended periodsof sitting in awkward positions, standing on a variety of surfaces and at differing angles, bending over,crouching,and climbing up and over obstructions such as scaffolding, ladders, and internal barge and boat structural members.
Necessary Equipment Operation:
  1. Mill gauges, both dry and wet.
  2. Profile gauge, both compare andmicro gauge.
  3. Spray guns; HVLP, electrostatic, andaluminizer.
  4. Distilling unit.
Special Skills:
  1. Willingto learn and become familiar with air permit regulations.
  2. Perform basic mathematical functions.
  3. Ability to work under deadlines and schedule pressures.
  4. Ability to read and interpret technical manuals.
  5. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  6. High performance anda strongteam player.
