Job summary

The Shyft Group is hiring an automotive paint technician to paint full-sized vehicles and ensure minimal defects, while performing preventive maintenance on paint equipment and maintaining accurate documentation of paint codes.

You will read and follow detailed instructions, mask color units, work with cross-functional teams, and contribute to a clean, safe, and efficient paint area. A HS Diploma or GED and 1–2 years of automotive paint experience are required.

Qualifications

  • HS Diploma or GED is required (automotive paint certification or vocational school certificate preferred).
  • Minimum 1-2 years automotive paint experience.
  • Demonstrated understanding of Paint materials and cleaning chemicals.
  • Vocational training for automotive finishing preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Paint full-sized vehicles with minimal defects.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on paint equipment.
  • Identify and spot repair paint defects per specifications.
  • Verify cleaning chemical concentrations.
  • Pre-treat and prep cabs and parts for paint.
  • Spray base coat and clear coat; mix tints to match paint codes.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of paint codes.
  • Coordinate material movement within the paint area.
  • Load and unload parts per process documentation.
  • Read and follow detailed operator instructions and drawings.
  • Self-check work and inspect prior processes.
  • Use basic hand, electric, cordless, and pneumatic tools.
  • Meet production goals and maintain a clean, safe work area.
  • Support 5S in the work area.
  • Communicate with cross-functional teams to resolve issues.

Job description

Regular Employee | Hourly Non-Exempt

What you’ll do:
  • Responsible for painting full sized vehicles with very minimal defects
  • Perform preventive maintenance on paint equipment
  • Identify and spot repair paint defects in accordance with appearance specification
  • Verify cleaning chemical concentrations
  • Pre-treat and prep cabs and parts for paint
  • Spray base coat and clear coat
  • Mix tints following a formula to match paint codes
  • Maintain accurate documentation of paint codes
  • Coordinate material movement within the paint area
  • Load and unload parts on racking or carts per process documentation
  • Learn and retain skills and practices needed to complete duties in assigned area
  • Read and follow detailed operator instructions, installation drawings, blueprints, etcetera, as required by a particular area
  • Self-check work and inspect prior processes
  • Use basic hand, electric, cordless, and pneumatic tools, as required
  • Meet production goals
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area
  • Initiate process improvements
  • Support 5S in work area
  • Communicate with manufacturing and other cross-functional teams (engineering, materials, purchasing, sales, etcetera) to resolve issues
  • Solve complex problems with minimal assistance
  • Know various customer vehicles and trucks
  • Ability to mask multiple color units & train FAP Paint

What you need to be successful:

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • HS Diploma or GED required (Automotive paint certification or vocational schoolcertificate preferred)
  • Minimum 1-2 years Automotive paint experience
  • Excellent attendance
  • Positive attitude
  • Strong and consistent attention to detail
  • Self-motivated with the ability to stay on task
  • Team oriented
  • Basic computer skills are required
  • No critical shortcomings on last performance review
  • Demonstrated understanding of Paint materials and cleaning chemicals
  • Vocational training for automotive finishing, preferred

ABLE TO:

  • Tolerate very high heat temperatures, high dust, and exposure to chemicals
  • Work overtime on short notice

BE WILLING TO:

  • Wear PPE respirators for extended amount of time
  • Improve self / area / company (including pursuing additional training, if needed)
  • Develop a working knowledge of company’s systems (example: AS/400)
