Job Purpose
The Painter is responsible for preparing and applying protective coating, paints, and finishes to the interiors and exteriors of large nonresidential structures including offices, classrooms, student housing building, athletic facilities, and other campus buildings. This position performs professional surface preparation, coating applications, and finishing work while ensuring compliance with OSHA safety standards. In addition, the role supports general building maintenance operations, completes helpdesk/CMMS work orders, and assists with projects to maintain safe, functional, and visually appealing campus facilities. Flexible scheduling may be required to minimize disruption to campus operations.
Position Description
- Prepare, repair, and finish interior and exterior surfaces across campus facilities by cleaning, sanding, patching, priming, and applying paints, stains, and protective coatings to drywall, wood, metal, and concrete surfaces.
- Perform painting projects in classrooms, laboratories, offices, student services areas, residence halls, and other college buildings.
- Operate commercial painting equipment, including brushes, rollers, spray guns, lifts, ladders, and scaffolding.
- Mix and match paints; estimate materials and maintain consistent, high‑quality finishes that meet institutional standards.
- Coordinate projects to minimize disruption to classes, campus events, and daily college operations, including working during school breaks or off‑hours as needed.
- Assist with remodeling projects, furniture moves, campus event setups (if applicable), and seasonal residence hall “make‑ready” (if applicable).
- Provide support to other trades if needed.
- Assist with related facility maintenance tasks, including minor carpentry, door and hardware adjustments, ceiling tile replacement, and basic fixture repairs.
- Maintain clean, safe, and organized job sites in accordance with OSHA and college safety policies.
- Accurately complete work orders and maintain records in the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).
- Identify and report facility or safety concerns to Facilities/Maintenance leadership and respond to urgent maintenance needs as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned in support of campus operations.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
- Knowledge of commercial painting practices, surface preparation, materials, coatings, and finishing techniques.
- Experience with drywall/sheetrock repair, taping, and finishing.
- Working knowledge of general building systems, including basic electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and HVAC fundamentals.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety standards related to painting and facilities maintenance.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and basic technical drawings.
- Proficiency in the use of painting tools, spray equipment, power tools, ladders, scaffolding, and lifts.
- Skill in using computers and software applications, including Microsoft Office and computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
- Ability to learn about campus building layouts, room locations, and facility infrastructure systems.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and complete assignments accurately.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively as part of a facilities team.
- Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks.
- Ability to maintain professional working relationships with faculty, staff, students, and contractors in an active campus environment.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED equivalent.
- Minimum of two (2) years commercial or residential painting experience.
- Experience operating painting machinery and spray equipment.
- Valid driver’s license and a clean motor vehicle record.
- Must successfully pass a background check conducted by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI).
Preferred Qualifications
- Three (3) or more years of commercial or institutional painting experience.
- Experience in a higher education or large commercial facility environment.
- Experience with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
- Experience with minor carpentry, plumbing, or electrical repairs.
Working Conditions
- Physical ability to lift 50 lbs. of material and carry several feet.
- Physical ability to work around the clock.
- Physical ability to work in extreme varying temperature ranges.
- Hearing ability sufficient to notice alarms and mechanical malfunctions.
- Visual ability is sufficient to drive vehicles.
Work Schedule
40 hours per week, during regular hours Monday – Friday, 6:00 am – 2:30 pm or 9:30 am – 6:00 pm. Must be able to work on a variable schedule/hour to meet operational needs. May require evening and weekend hours.
