Job Description
As a Paint Quality Inspector, you will play a critical role in ensuring the highest quality standards for our finished truck beds. You will be responsible for conducting comprehensive inspections, analyzing data, and recommending improvements to our production processes.
Responsibilities will also include maintaining paint quality standards through 100% paint testing, accurate data entry, paint mixing, and active communication with the Paint Technician and Paint Supervisor. The position supports continuous production while ensuring safety, quality, housekeeping, and documentation requirements are met.

Qualifications

Key Responsibilities

  • Final Inspection: Perform thorough inspections of completed truck beds, comparing them to blueprints, specifications, and customer requirements. This includes measuring dimensions, verifying functionality, and ensuring compliance with assembly procedures.
  • Process Monitoring: Monitor production lines to identify potential quality issues and ensure adherence to established standards.
  • Data Management: Utilize inspection data sheets, reports, and quality databases to record inspection results, summarize reworks and waste, and perform data entry.
  • Quality Improvement: Analyze quality control data to identify root causes of product defects and reworks. Propose solutions to improve production processes and enhance product excellence.
  • Communication and Collaboration: Advise the production team on effective quality control measures and work with engineers and management to resolve quality-related problems.
  • Continuous Learning: Participate in training programs and stay current with industry best practices to maintain your knowledge of quality control principles.
  • Measurement & Calibration: Maintain the accuracy of measuring equipment by verifying proper calibration and following calibration procedures. This may involve using gauges, calipers, and micrometers.
  • Statistical Analysis: Collect and compile statistical quality data to identify trends and areas for improvement.
  • Auditing: Conduct audits of test methods and inspection plans to guarantee their effectiveness.

SPECIFIC DUTIES OF THE PAINT QUALITY INSPECTOR

Paint Quality Testing

  • Perform mil-thickness testing on every truck body.
  • Perform visual inspection of each painted truck body.
  • Check for runs, sags, bare metal, thin coverage, blisters, bubbling, fish eyes, dirt, scratches, chips, uneven appearance, color/gloss issues, and areas that appear uncured.
  • Verify all readings meet the approved paint specification.
  • Record a PASS/FAIL result for each truck body.

Testing Data Entry

  • Enter every paint test and result into SafetyCulture/Mitti.
  • Accurately record truck/unit number, readings, test locations, defects, PASS/FAIL results, corrective actions, and retests.
  • Ensure all testing is entered timely and records are complete.
  • Audit testing records to verify 100% testing compliance.

Quality Issue Response

  • Place any failed truck body on Quality Hold.
  • Identify and document the failed area and reading.
  • Notify the Paint Technician and Paint Supervisor immediately.
  • Provide active feedback when readings or defects show a potential process issue.
  • Verify corrective action is completed and the affected area is retested before release.
  • Help identify and trend repeated paint quality failures.

Paint Mixing & Production Support

  • Check WIP and upcoming paint color requirements.
  • Maintain adequate paint and hardener levels to support production.
  • Mix paint batches every 30–40 minutes or as production requires.
  • Monitor acetone levels and prepare for change-out before levels become critical.
  • Prepare rattle cans/touch-up paint as needed.
  • Ensure paint, hardener, acetone, and required supplies are available.

Housekeeping & Daily Responsibilities

  • Maintain a clean and organized paint kitchen and testing area.
  • Monitor scrap and empty containers as needed.
  • Check dry room and caulking areas for required supplies.
  • Maintain testing equipment and verify calibration/verification status.
  • Complete all required End-of-Day checklists.
  • Communicate any open quality or supply issues to the Paint Supervisor before the end of the shift.
