Job summary

Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) in Worcester is offering a paid Student Officer in Training position that leads to a full-time Campus Police Officer role. The program spans Nov 16, 2026 to Apr 23, 2027, with academy training in Marlborough, MA and on-the-job WPI police training.

During the academy, students earn $25 per hour and after graduation the starting rate increases under the WPI Campus Police union contract.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Associate degree in Criminal Justice or a related field preferred.
• Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of application.
• Must possess a valid driver's license at the time of appointment.
• Must be of good moral character and fit for employment in law enforcement.
• Must be eligible to obtain Massachusetts License to Carry Firearms prior to the firearms segment of the academy.
• Must be able to obtain First Aid and CPR certifications.
• Must be physically fit and able to pass the MPTC pre-entrance physical fitness assessment (Cooper standards) and successfully complete the academy.
• Must successfully complete an oral interview, a background investigation, CORI checks, and a medical examination including drug testing for academy admission.
• Must successfully complete a POST certification upon graduation.

Responsibilities

• Attend and complete the MPTC Recruit Officer Course and meet academy requirements.
• Complete the WPI Police Department dispatch and field training programs.
• Assist staff with safety inspections and backfill dispatcher duties.
• Provide safety services, escorts and lockout assistance to the campus community.
• Promote positive relations with the department and the community.
• Respond to calls for police service in a support capacity.
• Develop incident action plans with sworn officers.
