Job summary

Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health invites nursing students to gain hands-on clinical experience through our Student Nurse Extern Program. This paid opportunity pairs externs with experienced RN preceptors across two nursing units in 4-week rotations, allowing students to apply their skills in real patient care settings.

Externs will assist with procedures, manage patient assignments, and observe interdisciplinary collaboration.

Qualifications

• CPR certification required within 30 days of hire.
• Current nursing student enrolled in ASN or BSN program.
• Completion of at least one nursing clinical rotation in an acute care med/surg setting prior to start.

Responsibilities

• Assists in completing Nursing Procedures, data collection and patient education.
• Performs and assists RN with skin care and patient hygiene.
• Performs basic pulmonary procedures and specimen collection.
• Provides comfort, basic support, and safety measures for patients and families.
• Completes errands as directed by RN or designee.
