Overview

Illinois State Archaeological Survey in partnership with the Forest Preserve District of Cook County is offering a summer paid internship program for Native American tribal members. This is a paid hourly position that supports the First Peoples grant, conducting survey and research in the Cook County Forest Preserves.

Eligibility

Applicants must be 18 years of age or older and members of a Native American tribe. No prior experience is required.

Compensation & Duration

Paid at $15.30 per hour for 2–8 week periods, depending on availability. The internship involves moderate physical exertion outdoors under sometimes challenging conditions. Work will be conducted in Cook County; lodging, per diem, or transportation is not provided.

Responsibilities

• Work outdoors with a team of heritage preservation specialists
• Identify, protect, and preserve cultural resources within more than 11,000 acres of Forest Preserve lands
• Learn to identify cultural artifacts and sites
• Assist in reporting cultural sites according to applicable laws and regulations
• Observe how GPS, GIS, and other technology is used in survey and reporting
