Job summary

Qualifications

  • Associates/Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience preferred.

  • Knowledge of beverage manufacturing processes, high-speed packaging equipment, safety and quality control standards.

Role Purpose

The Packaging Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the packaging operations and active performance management of the Packaging Operators and Lead. This role will work closely with the Sr. Packaging Manager, Assistant Packaging Manager, Packaging Leads and Packaging Operators to ensure meeting production targets while adhering to quality control and safety standards. This position will be a front-line leader in the packaging department.

Accountabilities & Impact
  • Safety / Food Safety: Lead by example and ensure that the team follows safety guidelines, as well as adhering to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs). Investigate and address safety incidents, near-misses, and hazards promptly. Encourages team to identify hazards and propose solutions.
  • Quality Control: Oversee quality control measures to maintain product quality and consistency and ensure that the team adheres to quality standards. Identify quality improvement opportunities and implement solutions.
  • Packaging Operations: Supervise and coordinate packaging activities and ensure that all tasks are completed according to production schedules and quality standards. Responsible for monitoring and auditing Packaging processes and use proactive planning and strategic thinking to identify and avoid upcoming challenges in the department. Leading cross functional team meetings to gain alignment with all other departments. Complete daily and weekly standard work and use or create Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) to ensure sustained and repeatable quality and overall performance results.
  • Productivity and Efficiency: Identify opportunities to improve packaging efficiency, reduce waste, and optimize production processes. Implement continuous improvement initiatives and cost-saving measures. Responsible for owning and driving results on the packaging line assigned.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Oversee routine maintenance and cleaning of packaging machinery. Report any equipment malfunctions or maintenance needs and collaborate with Maintenance Department to drive critical maintenance repairs and PMs.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate records and documentation related to production, quality control, and safety. Audit lead and operator performance and standard work to ensure quality inspection of product and other critical tasks (Sanitation, Clean, Inspect and Lubricate Standards, and critical setpoints) are being completed per the SOP’s.
  • Inventory Management: Collaborate with Supply Chain team to ensure that an adequate supply of packaging materials is available.
  • Team Leadership: Lead and motivate the team, providing guidance, training, and support as needed. Schedule and assign work tasks, to ensure cross-training, maximize use of all available resources, and overall team competency. Responsible for the career development of all reporting Packaging Operators and Leads. Hold team members accountable to daily expectations.
  • Escalation Procedures: Follow escalation process for problems or concerns that cannot be resolved at the team level, to higher-level management (department heads or plant manager) as it relates to safety, quality, performance goals, productivity, continuous improvement, and teamwork/harmony.
  • Shift Scheduling: Assist in shift scheduling and ensure proper staffing to meet production demands. Communicate scheduling changes and adjustments and flex labor utilizing processes as VTO.
  • Communication: Maintain clear and open communication within the packaging team. Communicate detailed and accurate shift performance through end of shift reports, shift handover meetings, daily production meetings, email, action logs, work orders, etc.
  • Process Improvement: Encourage a culture of continuous improvement, involve team members in problem-solving and process optimization efforts and recommend process changes. Use root cause analysis tools and critical thinking to improve or eliminate process errors. Create action plans and complete tasks on time when assigned.
  • Performance Feedback: Conduct performance evaluations on time (introductory period and annual) and provide regular constructive feedback. Recognize achievements and address areas for improvement. Take corrective actions when team members do not meet performance expectations: coaching, counseling, or disciplinary actions as necessary.
  • Development Discussions: Hold one-on-one accountability discussions with team members to review their performance, discuss areas for improvement, and set goals for continued development.
  • Administrative tasks: Complete all administrative tasks on time including but not limited to end of shift reports, turn time tracker, timecards, PTO/ Floating Holiday requests, corrective actions, introductory period reviews and annual performance evaluations.
  • Perform other various job duties as required.
Skills & Experiences Needed
  • Associates/Bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent experience preferred.
  • 5+ years of supervisory / leadership experience in manufacturing environment preferred.
  • Knowledge of beverage manufacturing processes, high-speed packaging equipment, safety and quality control standards required.
  • Experience in bottling or canning high speed operations desired.
  • Demonstrated and effective use of computer skills such as MS office, Teams, OneNote, and email.
  • Lean Management or similar program experience – preferred.
  • Proven experience and examples of creating, implementing and sustaining manufacturing processes and procedures.
Working conditions
  • Fast-paced and constantly changing work environment.
  • Shift work including days, evenings, overnight shifts, and up to 12 hrs.
  • Overtime work, including weekends and holidays as needed.
  • Ability to lift/push/pull/move up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to stand/move 8-12 hours per day.
  • Ability to ascend/descend stairs/ladders throughout shift.
  • Must wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including (but not limited to) bump cap, safety steel toe shoes, safety glasses, dust masks or PAPRs.
  • Must adhere to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs).
