Job summary

pladis Foods Limited in Reading, PA, offers a Packaging Engineer Internship to assist in the design, testing and cost-reduction of packaging materials under the direction of the Packaging Engineering Director.

You will collaborate with Purchasing, Marketing, Production, Planning, and Creative Services to support packaging initiatives and the introduction of new products, while developing packaging design skills and BOM awareness.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a BS Packaging Engineering or related technical discipline, or recent graduate.
  • Understanding of packaging design, BOMs, and packaging specifications for quoting.
  • Fundamental knowledge of printing processes and color management.
  • Knowledge of food packaging material science, packaging converting technology.
  • Proficiency with Word, Excel, Outlook; able to learn new software quickly.
  • CAD literacy: competent in AutoCAD and TOPS/CAPE.
  • Strong analytical, interpersonal, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities across projects.
  • Basic understanding of profit and loss factors and operations.
  • Experience designing, testing, and selecting packaging materials based on durability and cost.

Responsibilities

Job description

Packaging Engineer Internship

Under the supervision of the Director, Packaging Engineering, the Packaging Engineer Internship supports several key areas: Purchasing, Marketing, Production, Planning/Scheduling, and Creative Services. The position works to help support the design and testing of packages and packaging materials. The director looks to this position to identify, investigate and develop opportunities to reduce cost on packaging materials and/or labor through improved packaging design and systems, support production in the resolution of packaging issues, including implementation of new products into production, and maintain the development of structural and protective packaging components for various projects.

Responsibilities
  • Support design and testing of packages and packaging materials across multiple product lines.
  • Identify, investigate and develop opportunities to reduce packaging material cost or labor through design improvements.
  • Assist with production and manufacturing resolution of packaging issues and implementation of new products into production.
  • Develop structural and protective packaging components for CPG, Retail and Club Projects, Secondary and Tertiary packaging, and bulk packaging as specified by the Bills of Materials.
  • Specify, cost and test packaging components.
  • Work across cross‑functional teams, including plant management, to support packaging initiatives.
Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled in a BS Packaging Engineering or related technical discipline, or recent graduate.
  • Strong understanding of packaging design, product and bills of materials, and packaging specifications for quoting.
  • Fundamental knowledge of printing processes and color management.
  • Knowledge of food packaging material science, packaging converting technology, and basic distribution theories.
  • Proficiency in PC applications including Word, Excel, Outlook and ability to learn new computer programs quickly.
  • CAD literacy – competent user of AutoCAD (or equivalent) and TOPS/CAPE (or equivalent palletization software).
  • High level of analytical, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, prioritize effectively, and sustain activity on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Basic functional knowledge of profit and loss factors and operations.
  • Experience with designing, testing, and selecting packaging materials based on durability and cost effectiveness.
Compensation and Duration

Internship duration: 6 months. Compensation: $20/hour, 40 hours per week up to a maximum of 1000 hours.
