Job summary

Boston Scientific is seeking a Packaging Engineer II to develop and verify packaging for Class I–III medical devices in a hybrid role at our Arden Hills, MN office. You will write specs, run tests, analyze data and support design changes while coordinating with design, QA, risk, purchasing, marketing and regulatory teams.

The role emphasizes collaboration, problem solving and continuous improvement, with opportunities to advance packaging knowledge and influence sustainability.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in packaging engineering or related field (or 10+ years packaging design/testing experience in lieu of a degree).
  • Minimum of 2 years' experience in a design engineering role.
  • Strong communication and technical writing skills.
  • Proficiency with Word, Excel and Visio.
  • Ability to travel less than 10%.

Responsibilities

  • Complete packaging and product development activities, including writing and verifying specifications, maintaining documentation, testing processes, equipment, raw materials and products, and validating equipment and processes.
  • Independently plan activities necessary to meet project timelines.
  • Conduct packaging tests and experiments supporting new product development and improvements to existing designs.
  • Troubleshoot issues related to packaging design, materials and processes.
  • Summarize and analyze test results, draw conclusions, and communicate findings.
  • Generate packaging-related documentation, including specifications, test plans, reports and PDP documents.
  • Train technicians or operators on new processes or test procedures.
  • Apply TDP and PDP methodologies.
  • Serve as a core or extended team member on NPD and sustaining projects.
  • Identify opportunities to improve design, manufacturing and sustainability; submit VIP records.
  • Collaborate with departments, divisions and suppliers to promote practical, consistent and improved approaches to packaging.
  • Ensure resources to support Quality Policy and System compliance.
  • Maintain knowledge of emerging technologies and advances in medical device packaging.

As a Packaging Engineer II, you will support the development, verification and sustaining of packaging for Class I, II and III medical devices. You will create component and device specifications, develop and execute design verification protocols, conduct testing and data analysis, prepare reports, and support the implementation and assessment of new designs and design changes.

Working under direct supervision and guidance in a fast-paced, collaborative environment, you will apply problem-solving tools to support project deliverables and partner cross-functionally with teams including design, quality assurance, risk management, purchasing, marketing and regulatory.

At Boston Scientific, we value collaboration and synergy. This role follows a hybrid work model requiring employees to be in our Arden Hills, Minnesota office at least three days per week. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Serve as a core or extended team member on New Product Development (NPD) and sustaining projects.
  • Identify opportunities to improve design, manufacturing and sustainability; recommend solutions; and submit Value Improvement Project (VIP) records and Corporate Social Responsibility Sustainability Case Studies.
  • Collaborate with Boston Scientific departments, divisions and suppliers to promote practical, consistent and improved approaches to packaging.
  • Ensure appropriate resources, including personnel and tools, are maintained to support Quality System compliance and adherence to the Boston Scientific Quality Policy.
  • Establish and promote a work environment that supports the Quality Policy and Quality System.
  • Maintain knowledge of emerging technologies and advances in medical device packaging.

Required qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in packaging engineering or a related technical field (In lieu of a degree, minimum of 10 years' packaging design and testing experience in a related field may be considered).
  • Minimum of 2 years' experience in a design engineering role.
  • Strong communication and technical writing skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel and Visio.
  • Ability to travel less than 10% of the time.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Knowledge of applicable medical device packaging regulations, equipment, testing and processes.
  • Ability to work effectively on cross-functional teams.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to effectively manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Experience with packaging design software, such as TOPS or CAPE.
  • Previous Boston Scientific experience.

Compensation will be commensurate with demonstrable level of experience and training, pertinent education including licensure and certifications, among other relevant business or organizational needs.
