Job summary

Tyson Foods is seeking a Packaging Engineer I to support the development and execution of packaging solutions that protect product integrity and deliver value to consumers.

You will work with cross‑functional teams to test, optimize and implement packaging designs while contributing to sustainability, cost efficiency and regulatory compliance across product categories. Domestic travel is expected.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD in Packaging Engineering or related field.
  • 1+ year of relevant work experience with a Bachelor’s; Master’s+ acceptable.
  • Food packaging experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Support packaging development needs for new products and packaging changes.

Job description

The Packaging Engineer I supports the development and execution of packaging solutions that ensure product integrity, meets business needs, and delivers value to consumers. This role is responsible for assisting in packaging design, testing, implementation, and optimization projects across Tyson’s product categories. Working closely with cross‑functional teams, the engineer helps drive innovation, sustainability, and cost‑efficiency in packaging while gaining foundational experience in food packaging development. The individual in this role will also support Supply Chain and BU function in manufacturing packages that meet customer and consumer expectation for character, cost, and quality in assigned product category.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Support assigned Business Unit and cross‑functional teams (R&D, Marketing, Operations, Supply Chain, Procurement) with all package development needs for new products and packaging changes.
  • Manage multiple packaging development, technical application, sustainability, and cost reduction projects and/or programs.
  • Execute packaging trials and support line testing to validate performance and manufacturability. Collect and analyze packaging performance data to recommend improvements or cost‑saving opportunities. Assists with the development of technological innovation in equipment, materials, processing or package design including packaging development specifications.
  • Assists with the development of intellectual property for new package platforms / designs when applicable
  • Work as a cross functional resource with Business Units, Insights/Innovation, Supply Chain Engineering, Product Development R&D, and Procurement to develop new packaging platforms to support product innovation
  • Develop and maintain excellent working relationships with operations/divisional management and external customers. Collaborate with suppliers to evaluate new packaging materials, formats, or technologies.
  • Serve as a technical resource to the organization in at least one area of expertise. Ensure packaging solutions comply with regulatory, safety, and quality requirements.
Education:

Bachelor's, Master’s or a PhD degree in Packaging Engineering, or a related field of study, or a significant amount of equivalent, relevant, and practical work experience, is required.

Work Experience:

1+ year of relevant and practical work experience is required with a Bachelor's degree; no years of experience is required with a Master's+ degree; Additionally, previous experience with food packaging is a plus

Special/Technical Skills:

Good critical thinking, problem solving skills, and project management skills.

Requires basic computer skills in Microsoft Office. Familiarity with Cape, Tops, ArtiosCad, CAD, Specright, etc. is a plus.

Communication Skills:

Good verbal and written communication and presentation skills required. Must have the ability to effectively communicate with cross functional business partners.
