Job summary

System One is seeking a Packaging Engineer in Stamford, CT. The role is hybrid with up to 2 days remote, and involves designing and evaluating packaging for safety, efficiency and consumer appeal.

You will work with suppliers, coordinate tests, and support continuous improvement projects. The position requires an advanced degree in packaging engineering, 5–10 years of packaging experience, and expertise in blow/injection molding.

Job description

Job Title: Packaging Engineer

Location: Stamford, CT

Work Model: Hybrid (Up to 2 days per week remote)

Hours: M-F 8am-5pm

Compensation: $75.00/hr

Type: 2-year contract, Potential for extension or conversion to permanent

Responsibilities
  • Develops and designs new packaging for safe, convenient and attractive transport of products under a variety of conditions. Develops packaging material standards and specifications. Reviews existing test methods and develops new test methods where applicable.
  • Evaluates packaging and transporting methods and procedures to ensure compliance with safety and quality standards. Evaluates and recommends efficient packing procedures, innovations in packaging materials, and utilization of automation where needed.
  • Develops engineering drawings and specifications with suppliers to determine materials and design required to maximize convenience, utility and function based on the product’s physical characteristics, including safety and special-handling requirements.
  • Designs and coordinates laboratory tests plant trials to assess technical feasibility in the qualification of new materials, and equipment.
  • Provides technical support to ensure quality standards, package performance, and continued supply of products and packaging materials. Participates on continuous improvement teams.
  • May oversee the coordination of activities at contract packaging and labeling sites. Oversees exterior package design to ensure proper product identification, consumer appeal, printing appearance, and production techniques.
  • Ability to Execute projects on time and on budget with minimal guidance from manager. Proactively anticipates issues and determines contingency plans. Sets up realistic timelines and testing plans. Works well with cross functional partners to execute projects with excellence.
  • Tenaciously attacks programs. Is committed to achieving goals, through obstacles, issues and surprises. Able to change direction quickly if needed. Sets high standards of performance. Is assertive and persistent in project work and communication.
  • Seen as becoming a technical expert in packaging. Technical background in Packaging, Packaging Systems. Solid understanding of materials, and packaging applications. Able to solve moderately complex technical issues without support.
  • Communicates in a timely, concise and effective manner, both written and verbally. Able to present to V.P. levels in the organization without support from management. Active listener, interactive in meetings insuring POV is expressed and understood by cross functional team members.
  • Ability to act in an appropriate manner in varying business situations. Open to others input. Seeks support from cross functional partners for new initiatives and approaches. Able to rally cross functional peers to goal or action.
Requirements
  • Advanced degree in Package Engineering. Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or related technical discipline is required.
  • 5-10 years of packaging experience required.
  • Blow molding and injection molding experience preferred.
  • Capable of managing all types of packaging programs for a business unit.
  • Is seen as a technical expert in the field by team members and is a key technical lead on project teams.
  • Ability to support the packaging functional team with technical expertise.
  • Ability to identify and assess moderately complex technical problems and provide solutions and recommendations
  • Knows when to seek guidance and technical support from others.
  • Ability to manage assigned packaging projects in a proactive manner.
  • Ability to provide clear technical direction for projects.
  • Ability to serve as a technical mentor to co-ops and entry level engineers.
