Job summary

GEO Secured Services in the United States is seeking a Registered Nurse to provide comprehensive nursing care in a correctional setting, while observing operational security and licensure requirements.

The role involves performing physical assessments, assisting physicians during sick calls, administering medications, documenting care, coordinating Chronic Disease Clinic scheduling, and supervising LPN staff to ensure high-quality patient outcomes.

Qualifications

• Associate’s or Bachelor's degree from an approved program; graduate of an accredited school of nursing required.
• Must have a current, unrestricted license to practice as Registered Nurse in the state the facility is located.
• Two (2) years of direct work experience preferred.
• Must possess competence in crisis intervention, medical emergencies, physical assessment, medical nursing care, and psychiatric nursing care.

Responsibilities

• Perform a complete physical assessment and medical history as required on each detainee/inmate entering the correctional system, if permitted by the client.
• Assist the physician with sick call by screening patients and minor surgical procedures.
• Treat detainees/inmates with problems within professional capabilities and refers other medical problems to the appropriate physician.
• Ensure the implementation of physician's orders and administer prescribed medications using the formulary.
• Make observation rounds on patients and record in progress notes.
• Evaluate symptoms, reactions, and progress of patients and report problems to management.
• Maintain security while administering medications and be cognizant of drug hoarding and trafficking risks.
• Destroy and properly dispose of all needles/syringes.
• Prepare regularly scheduled reports and special reports.
• Maintain compliance with industry and company policies for accreditation.
• Document all detainee/inmate contacts and maintain confidentiality of medical records.
• Coordinate Chronic Disease Clinic scheduling.
• Supervise the workflow of the LPN staff and provide input into performance evaluation.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

Summary:
The Registered Nurse initiates and provides comprehensive nursing care in a correctional setting while observing and maintaining the requirements of operational security.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

• Perform a complete physical assessment and medical history as required on each detainee/inmate entering the correctional system, if permitted by the client. Medical problems are referred to the physician for extended evaluation.
• Assist the physician with sick call by screening patients and minor surgical procedures. Treat detainees/inmates with problems within professional capabilities and refers other medical problems to the appropriate physician.
• Ensure the implementation of physician's orders. Ensure that prescribed medications are administered as ordered using the formulary. Apply knowledge of drugs and therapeutics in administering medication.
• Make observation rounds on patients, and records in progress notes.
• Evaluate symptoms, reactions, and progress of patients on a periodic basis, charts, andreport problems to management.
• Maintain security while administering medications and is continually cognizant of the potential hazard of drug hoarding and trafficking among detainees/inmates. Maintain non‑involvement in the security aspects of care.
• Destroy and properly dispose of all needles/syringes.
• Prepare regularly scheduled reports and special reports, as necessary.
• Maintain compliance with industry and company policies for accreditation.
• Document all detainee/inmate contacts. Maintain confidentiality of medical records.
• Coordinate Chronic Disease Clinic scheduling.
• Supervise the workflow of the LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse) staff. Provide input into performance evaluation.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

• Associate’s or Bachelor's degree from an approved program; graduate of an accredited school of nursing required. Must have a current, unrestricted license to practice as Registered Nurse in the state the facility is located. Maintains a current copy of license on file at the facility at all times.
• Two (2) years of direct work experience preferred.
• Must possess competence in the performance of the following services: crisis intervention, medical emergencies, physical assessment, medical nursing care, and psychiatric nursing care.
• Must have the ability to work without direct, immediate supervision in performing nursing diagnosis, and be able provide appropriate follow through treatment.
• Ability to work with computers and the necessary software typically used by the department.
• Must be twenty‑one (21) years of age or older.
