Job summary

GEO Secured Services is seeking a Registered Nurse to provide comprehensive nursing care in a correctional setting, ensuring security and adherence to medical orders. The RN will perform physical assessments, assist physicians during sick calls, and manage medications with strict confidentiality.

Ideal candidates hold an associate or bachelor’s degree in nursing, with a current RN license in Michigan and at least two years of direct experience.

Qualifications

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in nursing required.
  • Two years of direct work experience preferred.
  • Must be competent in crisis intervention, medical emergencies, physical assessment, medical nursing care, and psychiatric nursing care.
  • Ability to work without direct supervision and follow through with treatment.
  • Must be able to work with computers and nursing software/systems.

Responsibilities

  • Perform complete physical assessments and medical histories for detainees entering the system.
  • Assist physician with sick calls and minor procedures.
  • Administer medications per orders and maintain formulary adherence.
  • Maintain progress notes and secure handling of medications.
  • Coordinate Chronic Disease Clinic scheduling and report findings to management.
  • Supervise LPN staff and contribute to performance evaluations.

Responsibilities

Summary: The Registered Nurse initiates and provides comprehensive nursing care in a correctional setting while observing and maintaining the requirements of operational security.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform a complete physical assessment and medical history as required on each detainee/inmate entering the correctional system, if permitted by the client. Medical problems are referred to the physician for extended evaluation.
  • Assist the physician with sick call by screening patients and minor surgical procedures. Treat detainees/inmates with problems within professional capabilities and refers other medical problems to the appropriate physician.
  • Ensure the implementation of physician's orders. Ensure that prescribed medications are administered as ordered using the formulary. Apply knowledge of drugs and therapeutics in administering medication.
  • Make observation rounds on patients, and records in progress notes.
  • Evaluate symptoms, reactions, and progress of patients on a periodic basis, charts, and report problems to management.
  • Maintain security while administering medications and is continually cognizant of the potential hazard of drug hoarding and trafficking among detainees/inmates. Maintain non-involvement in the security aspects of care.
  • Destroy and properly dispose of all needles/syringes.
  • Prepare regularly scheduled reports and special reports, as necessary.
  • Maintain compliance with industry and company policies for accreditation.
  • Document all detainee/inmate contacts. Maintain confidentiality of medical records.
  • Coordinate Chronic Disease Clinic scheduling.
  • Supervise the workflow of the LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse) staff. Provide input into performance evaluation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree from an approved program; graduate of an accredited school of nursing required. Must have a current, unrestricted license to practice as Registered Nurse in the state the facility is located. Maintains a current copy of license on file at the facility at all times.
  • Two (2) years of direct work experience preferred.
  • Must possess competence in the performance of the following services: crisis intervention, medical emergencies, physical assessment, medical nursing care, and psychiatric nursing care.
  • Must have the ability to work without direct, immediate supervision in performing nursing diagnosis, and be able provide appropriate follow through treatment.
  • Ability to work with computers and the necessary software typically used by the department.
  • Must be twenty-one (21) years of age or older.
