National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled (NLS) seeks an Oversea Librarian in Washington, DC, to provide library services and engagement to U.S. citizens living abroad. The role involves direct service, correspondence, and coordination with NLS networks.
The incumbent will work as the regional librarian, supporting blind and print-disabled users, applying advanced information services and technology to delivery, and ensuring access across international contexts.
This position is located in the National Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled (NLS), Patron and Network Engagement Division, Information Services Section (INF). The incumbent provides library services and engagement directly to NLS constituents as the regional librarian for U.S. citizens eligible for NLS service, who live abroad. Duties performed by the incumbent require knowledge of the wide range of activities involved in provision of library service and specialized formats. The incumbent provides library service and engagement directly to NLS constituents and serves in the specialized areas of blindness, low vision, reading and print disabilities.Services are rendered in person, or by correspondence, telephone, or electronic media. Requests originate from the blind and print disabled consumers and NLS network libraries serving them; Congress; U.S. and foreign government agencies; national and international academic, research, and scientific institutions; the professional and business communities; and from the general public. The incumbent exercises initiative, tact, and flexibility in meeting the informational requirements of constituents ranging from students to experts in their fields.The incumbent keeps abreast of the rapidly growing and complex body of library and information science and maintains an in-depth knowledge of the operation and resources of the section and of NLS as a whole, including applications of technology to library, information, and office services. The incumbent serves under the general administrative direction of the head of the section. Incumbent exercises considerable independence, initiative, and judgement in planning, organizing and performing work in accordance with established priorities and Information Services Section, PNE, and NLS guidelines and procedures. There is a minimal degree of review of completed work by the head of the section.
