Job Summary

A Crane Operator operates a crane to lift, position, and place machinery, equipment, or other large objects at construction sites and industrial facilities.

Overview Of Primary Duties
  • Ability to use a surveyor's level to maintain elevation grades on project sites.
  • Ability to operate and maintain a variety of light and heavy equipment.
  • Skill in planning and organizing.
  • Assists in unloading and assembling cranes or other hoisting equipment to be used in construction activities.
  • Utilizes basic skills as an operator in swinging rig, raising or lowering crane boom, raising and lowering load lines on the crane.
  • Maneuvers and positions load over designated areas in a smooth, safe manner.
  • Utilizes load charts to determine the load and radius capabilities of the crane.
  • Performs daily safety inspection of crane and recognizes possible problem areas such as worn cables, worn bands on hoisting mechanisms, broken gears, housing, etc.
  • Demonstrate Yates Core Values and Principles.
  • Follow Yates Code of Conduct.
  • Other related duties as needed and assigned by Field Supervision.

Safety Responsibilities and Expectations
  • Responsible for refusing unsafe work and for carrying out all work by the established Yates Safety Procedures and Work Practices.
  • Report all incidents, near hits, and hazards to management.
  • Required to wear and maintain personal PPE.
  • Advise fellow employees of hazardous situations.
  • Participate in workplace inspections.
  • Comply with statutory requirements, including duty of care.
  • Participate in required and assigned training.
  • Provide suggestions to improve Safety.
  • Present a mature approach to working safely.
  • Attend prestart and Safety meetings and contribute.
Qualifications
  • Four (4) + years of heavy industrial‑related heavy crane operator experience.
  • Be capable of successfully passing a crane operation certificate test.
  • Operate cranes by way of radio communications or hand signals, if applicable.
  • Responsible for maintaining safe crane operations as per Yates and manufacturers procedures/guidelines within the crane’s capabilities.
  • Wearing, inspecting, and caring for required personal protective equipment.
Requirements
  • Must be able to read and follow crane operator procedures.
  • Ability to read and interpret instructions and document, plan, and perform work activities independently.
  • The degree of job responsibilities and requirements may vary depending on months of experience.
  • Successful completion of required Safety training to include, but not limited to, Confined Space, LOTO, and Working at Heights.

  • Required to adhere to large amounts of standing, walking, bending, squatting, climbing, and lifting.
  • Ability to talk and hear to communicate.
  • Will use arms and hands to signal, grab, hold, turn, push, and pull objects, materials, controls, and tools.
  • Must be able to lift, carry, and move heavy objects up to 25 lbs.
  • Will use vision abilities to focus, see short and long distances, colors, depth perception, and peripheral vision.
