Job summary

Collins Machine Works outside or On-Site Machinists will set and operate manually controlled machines in skilled precision to perform repairs to equipment, vessels, and mechanical structures at customer facilities or at our Fifth Street and Syer Road locations in Portsmouth, Virginia.

Our On-Site Machinists travel to customer locations locally, throughout the United States, and abroad to perform site surveys and carry out repairs.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Effective verbal and written English communication.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints and drawings.

Responsibilities

• Transport and set up tools, machinery and fixtures for machining operations.
• Operate portable milling machines, lathes, grinders and other equipment.
• Take precision measurements with standard/measuring tools.
• Select and secure appropriate holding fixtures and tools for tasks.
• Read and interpret work instructions and drawings.
• Coordinate with customers and government representatives onsite.
• Maintain safe, clean work area and comply with procedures and regulations.
• Overtime may be required, including evenings/weekends.

Job description

With Collins Machine Works Outside or On-Site Machinists will set and operate manually controlled machines in skilled precision to perform repairs to equipment, vessels, and mechanical structures at customer facilities or at our Fifth Street and Syer Road locations in Portsmouth, Virginia. Our On-Site Machinists travel to customer locations locally, throughout the United States, and abroad to perform site surveys and carry out repairs.
We are looking for candidates who are willing and able to work the Night Shift for this position. The official hours are 3:00pm-11pm, however, depending on the job we are contracted to- the candidate must be flexible and willing to work later and longer shifts as needed. Night Shift differential pay and OT pay are additional.

Applicant must be a US citizen. Access to DoD facilities is required. Company is not able to sponsor work visa for this position.

Sign On Bonus

Collins Machine Works offers a sign on bonus in the amount of $2,000 to be paid after six months of satisfactory employment performance. Collins Machine Works also offers employee referral bonuses in the amount of $1,000 per referral to be paid after the referred employee completed six months of satisfactory employment performance.

Major Responsibilities & Essential Functions

• Transport and set up tools, machinery, and fixtures to support machining operations
• Perform machining operations using equipment such as: portable milling machines, clamshell lathes, line boring systems, grinding machines, hydraulic tensioning systems, as well as various hand and power tools.
• Take measurements of machined features using precision measuring equipment
• Properly and safely select, align, secure, and remove holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials onto machines
• Recognize, deploy, and properly use inserts, fixtures, and tooling
• Performs mechanical assembly and disassembly of equipment using a variety of hand and power tools
• Studies applicable drawings and prints of work to be performed and follows instructions
• Must be able to determine the proper tools required to perform given task
• Operates and utilizes lifting aids as necessary to perform work
• Communicates with customers and government representatives to coordinate work onsite
• Ability to track parts and jobs in JobBOSS and Travelers
• Perform all tasks in a safe and responsible manner while maintaining safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations
• Completes inspection and as-found condition reports for completed work
• Work overtime as needed on evenings and/or weekends
• Other duties as assigned

Preferred Machining Skills

• Lathes, Grinders, Boring Mills, Planers, Portable Tools
• Turn, Drill, Tap, Bore, Hone, Polish machine processes
• Large part machining experience preferred (ship propeller shafting, ship steering gear, etc.)

• 3 to 5 years related experience is preferred
• Language skills - effectively communicate and understand job instructions verbally and written in English
• Ability to effectively interpret and translate instructions to other employees in a professional and respectful manner

• Ability to interpret various technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables

• Ability to perform basic mathematical computations
• Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

• Ability to move or transfer products with an overhead crane
• Ability to lift and move up to 50 lbs. at a time when required
• While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, reach overhead with hands and arms, stoop, crouch, kneel, climb ladders, and use stairs
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
• The employee will also be expected to spend time using a computer
