Job summary

Planned Parenthood of Central and Western New York (PPCWNY) seeks an Outreach & Education Specialist to engage diverse communities in Buffalo, NY. The role focuses on developing and delivering reproductive health education, healthy relationships, and empowerment programs for youth and adults.

The position requires a bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, strong communication and organizational skills, and the ability to work flexible hours at multiple sites.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Services, Social Work, Health Education, or related field preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 4 years relevant work experience; or an associate’s degree plus two years in a community educator role; or 3 years in community education with cultural competence; or 2 years in PPCWNY program with cultural competence
  • Ability to facilitate discussion /teach classes to youth on reproductive health topics
  • Experience working with youth and being inclusive and non-stigmatizing
  • Proficiency in two or more languages desirable

Responsibilities

  • Assess community needs, present options, and determine follow-up actions.
  • Design and deliver programs on healthy relationships, sex education, birth control, and related topics.
  • Deliver evidence-based programs to youth in diverse settings.
  • Coordinate outreach events, health fairs, and school/college presentations.
  • Document client records and support annual/funder reporting.
  • Refer youth to family planning and health services as needed.
  • Participate in staff training and cross-training as requested.
  • Attend internal committees and represent PPCWNY in community meetings.

Outreach & Education Specialist

Buffalo, NY

In support of PPCWNY’s mission, the Outreach and Education Specialist is responsible for understanding and communicating information about a wide range of sexuality, relationship, and reproductive health issues working with a variety of individuals at all age levels. Their primary focus will be in the development and delivery of outreach programs geared towards reproductive health awareness, healthy relationships, and self-empowerment.

Essential Functions
Needs Assessment
  • Outreach Education Specialist conducts an assessment to identify needs, presents available options, which could be programs or services, and determines appropriate follow‑up
Program Development & Delivery
  • In the area of education, the Outreach & Education Specialist identifies designs and presents programs that meet the educational needs of the community: healthy relationships, safe sex, birth control teen pregnancy, etc.
  • Delivers evidence-based programs with fidelity to youth in a variety of settings
  • Conducts community outreach and education, participates in community events: health fairs, school and college presentations, community organizations, etc.
  • Ensures proper documentation is written for client records, annual and funder reports, etc.
  • Aids and/or refers youth to obtain comprehensive family planning services, health services or other essential support services as identified.
  • Is aware of annual goals and objectives of the organization and participates in their attainment by focusing on the education and counseling needs of our clients and patients (sensitivity and diversity training, etc.)
  • As needed, may develop and present in-service programs to other PPCWNY staff
Committee Participation
  • Attends and works on internal organization committees as requested
  • Attends community meetings as a representative of the organization, as required
Other Accountability Activities
  • Completes required reporting accurately and timely as designated
  • Participates in the annual update of all reference materials used in the Education and Clinic areas (flyers, brochures, referral lists, operation procedure manuals, etc.) to ensure consistency
  • Participates in affiliate initiatives
  • Participates in programs to ensure that cross training occurs leading to support of the clinic, as needed (pre- and post-HIV counseling)
  • Works on other projects as assigned

Requirements

Qualifications

Applicants must possess the following qualifications (or equivalent combination of education and experience):

Education/Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Services, Social Work, Health Education, or a related field preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience or one of the following equivalencies:
  1. 4 years relevant work experience
  2. Associate’s degree in a related field plus two years’ experience in a community educator role
  3. 3 years work experience in a community educator role and cultural competence with a demographic population
  4. 2 years work experience in a PPCWNY program and cultural competence with a demographic population.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Ability to facilitate discussion /teach classes to youth in a variety of settings on reproductive health topics such as reproductive anatomy, contraceptive methods, STIs, and HIV/AIDS
  • Experience working with youth and demonstrated ability to be inclusive and non‑stigmatizing in their role.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, and at various work sites as assigned.
  • PC skills needed in Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Must be very organized and able to handle multiple priorities
  • Must have excellent communication skills (verbal and written)

Working Conditions

Work Schedule

This is a full‑time position, 35 hours a week; regular schedule will be Monday - Friday with occasional evenings and weekends.

Benefits & Compensation

At PPCWNY, we are committed to equitable compensation practices and transparency. In alignment with these efforts, the pay for this position ranges from $20.74 to $24.05/hour. Actual compensation will be determined by experience and other factors permitted by law.
