Job summary

Avera is seeking a Behavioral Health Counselor to coordinate outpatient clinic operations, deliver individual and group counseling, and participate in crisis intervention. The role includes tele-therapy services, program development, and community outreach.

The position requires a Master's degree with QMHP/LPC/LCSW eligibility and a strong commitment to patient-centered care within a multidisciplinary team.

What You Will Do
  • Coordinates daily operations and ensures resources are available for clinic efficiencies. Assists in coordinating, planning, implementing and developing programs for clients/patients who require programs/counseling.
  • Provides program of behavioral health treatment for clients/patients and participates with physician/team planning for continued care in the specific treatment model respective to client/patient needs. May provide thorough evaluations/assessments and consultation services on an outpatient and inpatient basis and makes the appropriate recommendations specific to client/patient needs.
  • Promotes the behavioral programs and services within the community/region. Markets behavioral health within the Avera system. Promotes the psychotherapeutic programs and services within community agency referrals. Coordinates, implements and markets crisis intervention, addiction programming, and educational services. Utilizes behavioral assessment tools effectively for mental health-related conditions and makes appropriate referral/treatment recommendations.
  • Assists with staff/student on-the-job training/orientation. Monitors completion of mandatory in-services and all preparation activities for Joint Commission and other surveying organizations.
  • Assesses the client’s behavioral health condition on an ongoing basis and effectively recognizes the significance of changes warranting a modification of the treatment plan and/or the appropriate referral-related recommendations.
  • Communicates effectively with client, family, team members, physicians, inter- departmental staff and other agencies. Establishes and maintains therapeutic relationships with clients within individual and group counseling settings.
  • Maintains accurate and concise records through appropriate and timely documentation of counseling services and any pertinent information involving client/patient care.
  • Continues to develop standard care practices to integrate behavioral health and primary care services. Assists with the analysis and collection of data for Performance Improvement as appropriate/requested. Assist in formulation of policies for the clinic.
  • Assists in identifying and creating new evidence based services, programs and treatments. Leads therapy groups and fills in as needed if coverage needs warrant.
  • Participates in presenting to staff, community, clients mental health programs and interventions. Assess and handle patient/family concerns as well as problem-solving high-risk patient care issues.

Required Education, License/Certification, Or Work Experience
  • Master's
  • Qualified Mental Health Provider (QMHP) - Licensing Board active in the state of practice within 30 Days and
  • Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) - Licensing Board Upon Hire or
  • Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) - Licensing Board Upon Hire
Preferred Education, License/Certification, Or Work Experience
  • Licensed Addiction Counselor (LAC) - Board of Addiction and Prevention Professionals active in the state of practice or
  • Certified Addiction Counselor (CAC) - Licensing Board active in the state of practice
  • 3 years related experience and/or training
  • Clinical experience facilitating group therapy sessions and providing individuals counseling services
  • Experience working with clients having dual diagnoses issues (addictive disorders in conjunction with mental health conditions)
  • Clinical experience with couples and/or family therapy
