Job summary

Duke Health in Raleigh seeks a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant for outpatient palliative care. The APP provides direct patient care for adults, performs exams, orders diagnostics, prescribes medications, and collaborates with physicians to relieve symptoms and improve quality of life.

Typical hours are Monday–Friday, 8am–5pm. Applicants must meet NP/PA education and licensure requirements, with 2+ years of APP experience preferred.

Qualifications

• NP: Graduate of accredited MSN or DNP Nurse Practitioner program for adult care
• PA: Graduate of ARC accredited Physician Assistant Program, Masters or DSc Degree preferred
• NP: Must have current RN licensure issued by NCBON with authorization to practice as NP
• PA: Must have license to practice as PA issued by NCMB
• Both: Federal and State DEA independent license/prescriptive authority

Responsibilities

• Diagnose, plan treatment, set priorities with attending physicians and evaluate outcomes.
• Coordinate clinical care through established protocols under supervising physician.
• Assess status and initiate interventions to stabilize patients.
• Develop care pathways and guidelines with physicians and health care team.
• Analyze practice patterns to improve care efficiency and effectiveness.
• Communicate patient information to supervising MD, nursing staff, and home/hospice providers.
• Document all relevant data in medical records including test results and responses to therapies.
• Implement plans to alleviate suffering and promote comfort for patient and family.
• Prescribe medications and devices within prescriptive authority and regulations.
• Model competence in APP advanced skills.
