Jobtailor in Montana is seeking a dedicated Outdoor Adventures Guide to lead youth and adult programs in backcountry and front-country settings. You will deliver instructional activities, ensure safety, and foster positive member experiences across diverse environments.

The role requires flexibility for early mornings, evenings, and weekend shifts, with strong communication and organizational skills to manage multiple activities and equipment across our backcountry and resort-like operations.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent is required.
  • Experience as a guide for naturalist excursions and/or technical adventures preferred.
  • Ability to work with members and guests of all ages.
  • Knowledge of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem and nearby forests preferred.
  • Willingness to develop outdoor technical and soft skills.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the daily operations of Youth & Outdoor Adventures Department.
  • Facilitate Outdoor Adventure Activities and Events for participants of all ages.
  • Maintain safety and risk management in front-country and backcountry settings.
  • Guide backcountry programs in the Montana wilderness.
  • Create positive member experiences through effective communication.
  • Provide basic instruction in outdoor technical skills and activities.
  • Assist with rental programs and equipment maintenance.
  • Work outside normal hours for early morning and late evening tours.
  • Coordinate with other departments on scheduling and events.
  • Support trail maintenance and sign installation.

Job description

  • Assist with the daily operations of the Youth & Outdoor Adventures Department, including Youth Programs and Events, Club Activities, and Mountain Activities
  • Facilitate Outdoor Adventure Activities and Events for participants of all ages, ability levels, and backgrounds
  • Maintain high standards for safety and risk management in front-country and backcountry settings
  • Operate independently with minimal supervision in high-risk situations
  • Guide backcountry programs in the Montana wilderness
  • Maintain knowledge of outdoor technical skills, safety practices, and local ecology
  • Create positive member experiences through effective communication and approachable programming
  • Provide basic instruction in outdoor technical skills, including lessons, static archery courses, backcountry trips, and Yellowstone National Park tours
  • Assist with the rental program and maintain fly fishing, winter Nordic, snowshoe, and mountain bike equipment
  • Work outside normal operating hours for early morning and late evening tours
  • Maintain industry standards for safety, risk management, and emergency action
  • Coordinate with other departments on scheduling and events
  • Support trail maintenance and sign installation using chainsaws, drills, and hand tools
  • Operate golf carts, side-by-sides, dirt bikes, and ATVs to reach remote property areas
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements
  • High Diploma or equivalent
  • Experience working as a guide for naturalist excursions and/or technical adventures preferred
  • Ability to work with members and guests of all ages
  • Knowledge of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, Custer & Gallatin National Forest, Beaverhead National Forest preferred
  • Willingness to develop technical and soft skills in Outdoor Adventures required
  • Current First Aid/AED/CPR certification or willingness to obtain
  • Current Wilderness First Aid / Wilderness First Responder plus
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Fluency in English
  • Highly organized and flexible
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to communicate and relate to people from diverse backgrounds and cultures
  • Self-starter; able to carry out diverse duties with minimal supervision
  • Ability to create new Outdoor Adventure Programming and standards
  • Knowledge of hotel, resort and/or club operations preferred
  • Valid U.S. Driver’s License with good/clean record
  • Able to work a flexible schedule including weekends, evenings, and holidays
  • Computer literate in Microsoft Office and Google applications
  • Physically active for up to 8 hours a day
  • Regularly able to lift and/or move up to 30 pounds and sometimes up to 60 pounds
  • Able to participate in and supervise physical and active sports and games with children and adults
  • Able to work outdoors in inclement weather
  • Able to support trail maintenance projects
