Job summary

Benton Triage is seeking a Fiber Splicer to install, repair, and maintain fiber optic cables for our outside plant network. You will read schematics, perform fusion splices, test end-to-end service, and ensure secure terminations on cross connects and routers.

You must have a high school diploma or equivalent, a valid driver’s license, and the ability to travel to customer sites. This role requires readiness to work nights/weekends and adherence to OSHA/DOT standards.

Qualifications

  • Willingness to work nights and weekends to repair outages.
  • Experience with weighted splitter tap distribution is preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Self-motivated and able to work alone.

Responsibilities

  • Perform cable installation, construction, maintenance, and repair works.
  • Prepare cable and perform fusion splices for aerial and underground applications; ensure proper bonding and grounding of an aerial and underground plant.
  • Possess knowledge in all types of splicing activity, cable and safety test equipment and use of all types of cable construction equipment.
  • Locate and repair cables faults to maintain existing cable network without causing signal failure interruptions.
  • Validate and test end-to-end service provisioning for the cable network.
  • Confirm accurate cable terminations on cross connect, patch panels, hubs, and routers. Ensure all splice closures and termination points are airtight and free of moisture.
  • Travel to customer sites, project areas, business-related events, and other locations.
  • Read and interpret documents such as maps, staking sheets, and cable schematics, fiber count reports, verification reports, construction prints and splice schematics.
  • Review site surveys, condition discrepancy reports, design drawings, technical manuals for cable installation feasibility.
  • Maintain project tracing information such as production sheets, time sheets, and customer required paperwork.
  • Track and enter time for projects as required and provide detailed reports of field splicing activity.
  • Perform manual excavations, including utility exposure, transition, and termination.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, DOT, FCC, and other regulations.

The Fiber Splicer specializes in installing, repairing, and maintaining fiber optic cables to ensure the quality and timely delivery of telecommunications services to our customers. Individuals in this role are responsible for reading and interpreting schematics and diagrams to splice, terminate, and test fiber‑optics, proper preparation and splicing of fiber optic cable, as well as maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing damaged cable and related issues in the outside plant network.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform all work in accordance with industry and Company standards and per all government regulations including OSHA, DOT, FCC, etc.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, which are reasonably within the scope of the responsibilities of this job classification.

Physical Requirements:
  • Drive and operate a vehicle, and/or bucket truck. Must be able to drive or ride in a vehicle for up to four hours to travel to and from job sites.
  • Ability to safely work from heights, up to 50’ in bucket truck or ladder.
  • Manage pole climbing, working at heights, handling ladders, and pushing, pulling and bending equipment.
  • Ability to sit, stand, climb, kneel, bend, lift, crawl, squat, reach and utilize both hands and feet in an aerial and underground capacity.
  • Environmental conditions: Must be able to work in different temperatures and changing weather conditions. exposure is heat, cold, dust, wet, vibration and very loud noise. Must be able to traverse and inspect all areas of jobsite in all types of weather; this may include walking, climbing, reaching, bending, crawling, or stretching.
  • Repeated and frequent ability to lift, from floor to above head 80 lbs. continuously and push and/or pull 50-pound loads at a time. Must have physical strength, balance, hand-eye coordination, and stamina necessary to complete jobs in various areas.
  • Must be able to stand and walk up to eight hours per day and climb multiple sets of stairs while carrying materials weighing between 40 and 60 pounds.
  • Must be able to clearly see color and shading in plans and materials. Must have vision to allow differences in colors, shades, and brightness.
  • Exposure to characteristic construction site dangers.
  • Must have flexibility in scheduling to meet the needs of the business.
