Job summary

IQ Fiber is seeking an Outside Plant Engineer to support activation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of fiber network infrastructure. You will work with Construction Coordinators, Fiber Splicers, and NOC teams to ensure reliable service and adherence to standards.

The role involves planning service activations, performing network tests, and providing hands-on field engineering support. On-call rotations and collaboration with multiple teams are essential to success.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in engineering or a related field.
  • Strong fiber network architecture and splice techniques.
  • Experience with FTTH and OTDR testing.
  • Ability to work after hours and on-call.
  • Proficiency with trouble-ticketing systems and MS Office.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and execute service activations for commercial networks.
  • Coordinate cable splicing and power level verification.
  • Perform OTDR readings and related diagnostics.

Position Summary

The Outside Plant Engineer is a hands‑on field engineering role responsible for supporting the activation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of fiber optic network infrastructure. This position collaborates with Construction Coordinators, Fiber Splicers, and Network Operations teams to ensure reliable network performance, successful service activations, and adherence to company and industry standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Plan and execute service activations and configurations for commercial and enterprise network environments

  • Perform network infrastructure tasks, including distribution construction support, cable splicing coordination, and power level verification

  • Conduct system testing, including OTDR readings, optical power measurements, and related diagnostics

  • Provide technical support and troubleshooting assistance to NOC and Network Engineering teams

  • Manage firmware updates, patches, and equipment changesin accordance withchange management protocols

  • Collaborate with NOC, Network Engineers, and external vendors to support network operations and activations

  • Lead troubleshooting efforts and support resolution of plant and network issues

  • Maintainaccuratedocumentation and ensure adherence to quality standards and OSHA safety requirements

  • Participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation to support network outages and service impairments

  • Demonstrateexpertisein network architecture, fiber design, and technical documentation

  • Perform other duties as needed

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s or Associate’sdegree in engineering or a related technical field, or equivalent experience

  • Strong knowledge of fiber network architecture, troubleshooting methodologies, and splicing techniques

  • Proficiency in optical networks and FTTH (Fiber-to-the-Home) architecture

  • Experience working with network equipment, including switches, routers, and OLTs

  • Strong organizational and project management skills

  • Ability to work after hours, weekends, and respond to emergency situations as needed

  • Ability to maintain on-call readiness within the assigned market

  • Ability to pass background screening and driver’s record check

  • Ability to meet physical requirements, including visual acuity (close vision, color vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment)

  • Proficiencywith troubleticketing systems and Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word)

Preferred
  • Experience working in telecommunications or fiber network deployment environments

  • Experience supporting NOC operations or Tier III troubleshooting

  • Familiarity with network monitoring tools and systems

What Success Looks Like:
  • Service activations and network configurations for commercial and enterprise customers are consistently executed accurately and on time, with clean handoffs and minimal post-activation rework.
  • Fiber network infrastructure is proactively maintained and effectively troubleshot, with issues quickly diagnosed, clearly communicated, and resolved in a way that minimizes service disruptions and customer impact.
  • Network performance testing and validation are performed with accuracy and consistency—using tools such as OTDR and power meters—with results interpreted correctly and translated into actionable next steps (repair, optimization, or escalation).
  • Cross-functional collaboration with NOC, Network Engineering, and field operations is consistent and effective, ensuring smooth execution of field work, timely escalations, and alignment on priorities during incidents and activations.
  • Safety, quality, and documentation standards are met every time, with OSHA and company requirements followed and work records kept complete, timely, andaudit-ready.
