Job summary

UCI Health in Irvine seeks an Orthoptist to analyze and treat binocularity and ocular motility disorders, triage patients, supervise residents, and develop training programs.

  • Triage patients in the absence of the ophthalmologist.
  • Supervises first and second year ophthalmology residents and fellows.
  • Prepares and conducts training programs for certified orthoptists.
  • Develops teaching outlines, plans, and instruction procedures.
  • Evaluates progress through practical application and tests.
  • Organizes vision screening in community schools.
  • Provides training to local pediatricians interested in learning about orthoptic services.
  • Compiles data on patients in clinical trials.
  • Prepares manuscripts for publications and presents the design, scope and/or results of research projects.
  • Assists the clinic administrator in evaluating clinic technical support staff.

Your Role on the Team

Required Qualifications
  • Understanding of medical terminology, infectious control techniques, and age‑related acuity levels.
  • Competent in collecting and interpreting data about each patient’s status to identify age‑specific needs.
  • Certification as an Orthoptist by the American Orthoptist Council or a Bachelor’s in Medical Science with orthoptic training.
  • Able to evaluate and document the patient/family response to care.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
  • Ability to maintain flexibility and work well in a constantly changing environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of Title 22 and JCAHO standards.
  • Five years of training or experience in orthoptic techniques.
  • Bilingual skills in English and Spanish and/or Vietnamese.
  • Ability to instruct others in the use of equipment and performance of procedures.
Licenses And Certifications
  • Basic Life Support.
