Job summary

The Department for Blind/Vision Impaired in Virginia seeks an Orientation and Mobility Specialist to assess and instruct individuals who are blind or vision impaired, enabling greater independence and safe navigation. The role requires certified O&M credentials or eligibility to sit for exams within 6 months and involves coordinating with a supportive team.

Telework is limited based on agency needs; consent to fingerprinting and economic interest statements may be required.

Qualifications

• Must be trained in orientation and mobility and certified by the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals (COMS) or National Blindness Professional Certification Board (NOMC) or meet eligibility requirements to sit for exam within 6 months of hire.
• Knowledge of orientation and mobility principles, adjustment to blindness concepts, the rehabilitation process, and the education of individuals with visual impairments.
• Knowledge of functional implications of eye disorders.
• Demonstrated ability to assess orientation and mobility needs and plan an individualized program of O&M instruction.

Responsibilities

• Provide orientation and mobility assessment and instruction to individuals who are blind or vision impaired to maximize independent travel.
• Help clients travel independently and safely in familiar and unfamiliar areas.
• Perform other duties and/or special projects as assigned.
