Job summary

Southpoint Surgery Center, situated between Raleigh and Durham in the Durham-Southpoint area, seeks an experienced perioperative RN to provide individualized nursing care in a dynamic ambulatory surgery setting.

You will collaborate with surgeons, anesthesia providers, and OR staff to ensure safe, high-quality patient care, from pre-op through post-anesthesia care, while adhering to standards and improving processes.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing; Associate degree required; BSN preferred.
  • Current North Carolina RN license or compact multi-state license.
  • BLS from AHA/ARC required on hire.
  • ACLS & PALS preferred; must obtain both within 6 months if not active.
  • CNOR certification strongly preferred.
  • Familiar with perioperative instruments and equipment.
  • Ability to demonstrate manual dexterity in handling instruments.

Responsibilities

  • Provide individualized nursing care to the surgical patient and coordinate a safe plan of care.
  • Follow age-specific standards for medications, anesthesia-related care, and procedures.
  • Incorporate cultural and developmental needs into the plan of care.
  • Demonstrate excellent communication and organizational skills; maintain patient safety.
  • Prioritize tasks amid interruptions and collaborate with the multidisciplinary OR team.
  • Document patient care in the medical record per standards; participate in Universal Protocol and time-out.

Job description

Southpoint Surgery Center (SPSC), an affiliate of North Carolina Specialty Hospital, is a new Ambulatory Surgery Center located between Raleigh and Durham in the Durham-Southpoint area. SPSC will provide a differentiated outpatient delivery model focused on providing high-quality, cost-effective solutions for surgical and related ancillary care for patients. SPSC is a multi-specialty 22,298 sq. ft. facility accommodating the following: Ortho, Spine, Ophthalmology, ENT, GYN, General, Urology, Plastics, Podiatry, Vascular, and Pain. Job Duties
  • Provide individualized nursing care to the surgical patient, demonstrating an extensive knowledge base to support a variety of single and multi-system illnesses and or injuries. The RN controls the environment within the surgical suite and accepts responsibility for developing and coordinating a safe plan of care utilizing standards of practice and within the framework of set forth by the policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates appropriate application of age specific standards, policies, and procedures and guidelines in caring for adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients: follows age specific standards in administering medications based on patient's age; follows age specific standards of care during altered states of consciousness related to analgesia, conscious sedation or anesthesia; uses age specific standards, policies and procedures and guidelines to perform treatments and procedures that are routine for unit/clinic based on patient's age.
  • Incorporates cultural and developmental needs into plan of care: in collaboration with the patient/family, and in a developmentally and culturally appropriate manner, implements the plan of care; demonstrates competency in the provision of nursing care according to established standards of nursing practice and in developmentally appropriate manner.
  • Demonstrates excellent communication skills, highly organized with excellent organizational and decision-making skills.
  • Demonstrates ability to concentrate on many detailed requests despite numerous interruptions and the ability to prioritize tasks to maintain patient safety.
  • Provides documentation of patient care in the patient record according to established standards of nursing care.
  • Participates and promotes Universal Protocol and time out procedure in every procedure.
  • Demonstrates ability to work with a multidisciplinary team including, surgeons, physician's assistants, anesthesia providers, SPD staff, Radiology and all other OR team members to plan for the care of the patient and to provide for the optimal outcome for the patient. The OR RN is a patient advocate and assesses the patients’ needs through the peri-operative experience and adjusts the plan of care accordingly while communicating the same with all team members.
  • Participates in performance improvement activities which include collecting, analyzing data to identify quantifiable measures to maintain quality and the promotion of desired outcomes. Also includes participation in development of patient care delivery systems, standards, policy and procedures, and problem-solving teams.
Education And Experience Requirements
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing; Associate's degree required; BSN preferred
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse from the North Carolina State Board of Nursing or compact multi-state license
  • BLS from American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) required upon hire
  • ACLS & PALS from American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) preferred; must obtain both certifications within 6 months of hire if certification(s) is/are currently not active
  • CNOR Certification strongly preferred
  • Familiar with instruments and equipment related to Perioperative Nursing
  • Ability to demonstrate manual dexterity in handling instruments
