Job summary

Position Summary

Provide support for Operating Rooms by ensuring all regular and special order equipment and instruments are operable and available on the day of surgery. Ensure adherence to Hospitals and departmental policies and procedures. No patient care.

Detailed Responsibilities
  • EQUIPMENT - Plan, organize and control operating room equipment and instrument resources and provides input into plans for equipment and instruments
  • EQUIPMENT - Work in collaboration with RN Supervisors and OR Techs on equipment needs; assist with trial and evaluation of products for assigned service line; look for opportunities for cost reduction
  • EQUIPMENT - Create and maintain an equipment reference manual for assigned service group
  • EQUIPMENT - Assist in the development and maintain an equipment locator system by using a standard naming and location convention
  • EQUIPMENT - Monitor accurate records of all equipment inspections, maintenance, and action plans; Coordinate repair of broken equipment with Biomed Engineering; Order light bulbs, ink cartridges, print paper, and gas cylinders for all equipment; keep logs of equipment out of repair for follow up
  • COMMUNICATION - Maintain active communication among interdepartmental staff, physicians and service group team members
  • SCHEDULES - Ensure there is no conflict between scheduled cases and available equipment
  • COMMUNICATION - Communicate with scheduling and supervisor constraints that impact on scheduling system/process about equipment, loaners, repairs, special requests, and the time element involved
  • EQUIPMENT - Assist on an as needed basis with the set up and operation of equipment and instrumentation for various cases
  • EQUIPMENT - Serve as a resource to the RN Supervisors and team members in the use of equipment, instruments and materials
  • PATIENT SAFETY 1 - Follow patient safety-related policies, procedures and protocols
  • PATIENT SAFETY 2 - Demonstrate proactive approach to patient safety by seeking opportunities to improve patient safety through questioning of current policies and processes
  • PATIENT SAFETY 3 - Identify and report/correct environmental conditions and/or situations that may put a patient at undue risk
  • PATIENT SAFETY 4 - Report potential or actual patient safety concerns, medical errors and/or near misses in a timely manner
  • PATIENT SAFETY 5 - Encourage patients to actively participate in their own care by asking questions and reporting treatment or situations that they don't understand or may "not seem right"
  • LIAISON - Serve as a point of contact between sterile processing department and the operating room in order to assure smooth, uninterrupted daily instrument support; facilitate continuous communication and performance improvement as it relates to surgical instruments
  • INSTRUMENTS - Responds immediately to instrument requests from the Operating Room; react with a sense of urgency, be courteous and service oriented at all times; develop and implement permanent solutions in conjunction with the Service Coordinator and the department manager, as appropriate
  • INSTRUMENTS - Coordinate the removal of malfunctioning instruments and ensures the item is placed in the appropriate location to be sent for repair or disposal; facilitate replacement of the instrument with department supervisor or manager
  • INSTRUMENTS - Help remove sterile instruments from instrument carts and case carts and return the items to their appropriate storage location
  • COORDINATE - Coordinates department functions that are necessary to support the OR to include the decontamination, processing and sterilization of surgical instruments and as necessary the rapid processing of instruments needed immediately or for following cases; effectively communicate the immediate needs to the department supervisor or manager
  • COORDINATE - Coordinate with department manager and other team members the execution of plans and projects as necessary to assure continuous performance improvement

Medium Work: Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.
