About the role

At AEG, we believe great patient experiences begin with great teams. As an Optometric Technician, you'll work alongside the Optometrists to support all aspects of patient care and education, ensuring that patients receive exceptional care.

The Optometric Technician conducts pre‑testing procedures, assists with specialty diagnostic testing, performs post‑exam tasks, and manages the doctor’s appointment schedule to ensure every patient receives an efficient, high‑quality experience from start to finish.

  • Perform preliminary evaluations of patients prior to exam by the Optometrist, such as dilation, topicals, diagnostic medications, Optomap, auto reflector, visual acuity, etc.
  • Performs verbal interview with patient prior to visit with Optometrist to determine medical issues and reasons for their visit to provide details to Optometrist.
  • May be required to schedule referral appointments with Ophthalmologists, Diagnostic follow‑up visits, and other specialty referrals, and complete paperwork.
  • Records and maintain patient records / files in compliance with company, federal, and state policies (HIPAA).
  • Responds to patient telephone inquiries regarding medication, treatment, problems referring to the Optometrist as necessary.
  • May be required to perform diagnostic testing using specialty equipment (OCT, Visual Field, Pachymetry, Retinal Camera. Etc.).
  • Documents medical findings and communication between Optometrist and patient in Electronic Health Records(EHR) and assist with clerical duties related to medical documentation (participating practices only). Checking CPT codes, billings for post op, office visit etc.
  • Ensures that maximum schedule utilization occurs through pre‑appointment confirmation, daily appointment confirmation, contacting patients from recall listings, contacting no‑shows or canceled patients to reschedule.
  • Performs contact lens insertion and removal classes (I&R) and manages the contact lens trial inventory, check‑in and take contact lens orders in person or by phone.
  • Performs end‑of‑day responsibilities to include opti‑schedule wrap‑up, end‑of‑day checklist, etc.
  • Cleans and organizes frame boards, displays, mirrors, work bench, office area, maintaining overall cleanliness and visual appeal of the practice.
  • May be asked to act as a scribe for the Optometrist or perform refractions.
  • Performs other duties within the practice as requested.
Requirements
  • Experience evaluating patients for eye exams and dispensing eye exam medications.
  • Familiarity with medical terms associated with eye treatment.
  • Industry certification (CPO, CPOA, CPOT).

Qualifications

  • High School or GED qualification.
  • Strong attention to the details and ability to work under pressure in fast paced environment.
  • PC skills to include MC Office, Windows, and Word Processing.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively and professionally collaborate with co‑workers and patients.
