Heart of Florida Health Center is seeking an Optometric Technician/Patient Services Representative to provide clinical and front-office support. The role performs patient pre-testing, assists with examinations, and supports the optometrist in eyewear services.

You will also register patients, verify insurance, collect payments, and help maintain smooth patient flow in a busy practice. Strong communication and multitasking are essential.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree or relevant certification preferred.
  • Certification as a Certified Paraoptometric (CPO) or willingness to obtain within 12 months preferred.
  • Experience in an optometry/ophthalmology setting strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency with computers and willingness to learn electronic health record (EHR) systems.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment and maintain accuracy.
  • Demonstrated commitment to quality service and teamwork.
  • Strong organizational, time management, and multitasking skills

Responsibilities

  • Conducts preliminary testing including visual acuity, autorefraction, and retinal imaging.
  • Documents patient history, medications, and symptoms accurately in the EHR.
  • Prepares patients for examinations and assists during diagnostic or contact lens procedures.
  • Provides patient education regarding eyewear care, lens use, and eye health.
  • Orders, dispenses, and adjusts eyewear; maintains optical inventory and displays.
  • Cleans, calibrates, and properly shuts down diagnostic equipment.
  • Greets and registers patients in a professional, welcoming manner.
  • Verifies insurance eligibility and benefits prior to service.
  • Collects applicable copays, eyewear payments, and other fees; posts transactions accurately in the EHR.
  • Balances daily cash, credit card, and check receipts, preparing deposits for review.
  • Educates patients about the sliding fee scale, payment plans, and HFHC financial policies.
  • Coordinates with billing staff to address insurance alerts and documentation requirements.
  • Schedules and confirms appointments; manages recall lists and follow-ups.
  • Answers phones, returns messages, and routes inquiries to appropriate staff.
  • Maintains a clean, organized front office and exam area.
  • Supports patient access to the Patient Portal and promotes use of HFHC services.
  • Assists with reporting, documentation, and other duties assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.
