Job summary

IDEX is seeking an Opto-Electronics Engineer to join its RD&E team, focusing on laser-driven illuminators and optical subsystems. Qualifications

• BS in Optical/Electrical Engineering or Physics with 2–4 years of relevant experience, or MS with 2 years of experience.
• Experience with optical test and evaluation equipment and photometric/radiometric measurements.
• Familiarity with Zemax and testing of optical-based integrated systems.

Responsibilities

• Apply concepts of optics, electronics, and laser physics to optical imaging systems and beam delivery.
• Model and optimize 3D optical systems; design and prototype bench-top optical systems.
• Coordinate with optomechanical and CAD designers to define tooling and tolerances; generate lens and coating requirements.
• Perform data analysis and statistical analysis on test data; support R&D prototypes and production processes.

Opto-Electronics Engineer ITAR/EAR CRITERIA

SCOPE OF ROLE

The LSO group is currently looking for a talented engineer (level based on experience and education) to join its seasoned RD&E team. This is an opto-electronics, optical, and laser engineering role having both wide-ranging technical needs as well as requiring some knowledge depth in the area of illumination modeling. Design work includes architecture layout of laser diode-based illuminators, specification of key optical and electronic components, Zemax modeling, and analysis of illuminators/laser engines. The role will require lab experience to aid in the build, integration, and test of prototype illuminators and opto-electronic subsystems. Data analysis skills that facilitate manufacturing reliability predictions based on prototype performance are a plus.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

In-depth knowledge and the ability to apply concepts of optics, electronics, and laser physics for optical imaging systems, beam shaping, and beam delivery are required. Ability to model and optimize 3D optical systems. Comprehensive experience with designing and prototyping bench-top optical systems is preferred. Experienced and knowledgeable in laser physics and Gaussian beam propagation. Interface with optomechanical and CAD designers to define tooling, optical mounting, and human interface requirements-based tolerances. Ability to generate lens requirements, coating requirements, and optical system requirements from customer interactions and documents. Design feasibility experiments for optomechanical sub-systems, at times using simulation tools, in support of R&D prototypes and production processes. Attention to detail. Demonstrate persistence in identifying the cause of unusual results; strong problem-solving skills. Responsible for analyzing test data and conducting statistical analysis. Participate in the specification, integration, and troubleshooting of electronic subsystems associated with laser and optical products, including laser drivers, photodetectors, control electronics, and signal conditioning circuits. Utilize electronic test equipment such as oscilloscopes, power supplies, DMMs, and data acquisition systems to characterize and debug opto-electronic systems. Complies with the Clean Room Protocol.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

A Bachelor of Science degree in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a related engineering discipline with 2 to 4 years of relevant experience, or a Master’s degree in a directly related field with 2 years of relevant experience. Writing technical reports in both detailed written format and concise pictorial oral presentation format. Working knowledge of optical test and evaluation equipment; familiar with photometric and radiometric measurements. Direct experience in the specification and testing of optical-based integrated systems. Experience with one or more optical design software packages such as Zemax. Demonstrated understanding of electronics fundamentals, including analog circuits, signal conditioning, sensor interfaces, and basic embedded or control systems. Experience working with laser diode drivers, photodiodes, detectors, data acquisition hardware, or other opto-electronic systems is preferred. Familiarity with schematic interpretation, electrical measurements, and laboratory debugging techniques is desirable.

Total Rewards

The compensation range for this position is $88,200.00 - $132,200.00, depending on experience. This position may be eligible for performance based bonus plan.
