Job summary

Thorlabs is seeking an entry-level manufacturing associate to support our photonics product fabrication. You will assist in preparing materials, loading/unloading optical equipment, and performing in-process measurements. Teamwork and attention to detail are essential to achieve high quality with minimal scrap.

You will help maintain records and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives. Ideal candidates have at least a year in manufacturing or relevant technical education, a high school

Qualifications

• Minimum of 1 year of manufacturing experience or related technical education.
• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment and comply with high quality standards.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to shift between tasks as production demands change.
• Proficient in basic computer skills such as Microsoft Office.

Responsibilities

• Load and unload optical manufacturing equipment such as cutting, edging, grinding and polishing.
• Prepare raw materials for processing and maintain records in the Manufacturing Database.
• Operate machines in the production area and perform basic maintenance on them.
• Sort, count and examine parts for defects; ensure output meets quality standards.
• Participate in Continuous Improvement activities and adhere to safety policies.

Job description

This position works among a team of individuals manufacturing Photonics products for our customers with the assistance of experienced team members. The role entails such functions as kitting, operating machines, and in process measurements.

Essential Job Functions include the following, but are not limited to:

• Able to work in a production area with low degree of difficulty processes.
• Prepare raw materials for processing using blocking methods such as wax, pitch, film and optical contacting.
• Remove work from tooling and clean/prepare for next process.
• Perform daily maintenance and upkeep of assigned machines in area.
• Basic operation to load and unload optical manufacturing equipment such as cutting, edging, grinding, and polishing machines.
• Utilization of conventional, double-sided, and CNC based equipment to work on glass and crystal materials to produce components such as windows, mirrors, prisms, filters, and lenses.
• Introduction to visual and mechanical measurement of parts using metrology devices such as eye loupes, microscopes, calipers, micrometers, and indicators.
• Handle and Clean Specialty Fiber Optics, Precision Optics, and mechanical components.
• Sort and count parts and materials.
• Examine parts and materials for defects.
• Must be able to understand written work instructions and technical drawings for a wide range of products to properly manufacture the final product to the highest of quality standards with a goal of zero scrap or rework.
• Maintain proper records in our Manufacturing Database.
• Participate in Continuous Improvement efforts.
• Comply with the company safety program and maintain a clean and organized work area.

• Meeting company standards pertaining to quantity and quality of work performed on an ongoing basis, performing all work-related tasks in a manner that is in compliance with all Company policies and procedures.

Physical Activities:

Work may be active, could stand or sit for long durations and/or perform repetitious work at times. The employee must frequently lift or move objects up to 20 pounds. All objects heavier than 20 pounds will be lifted by group of employees. Must be able to wear appropriate clothing and personal protective equipment such as but not limited to masks, glasses, gloves, and specialty garments. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and may be noisy at times.

Qualifications

Experience

Minimum of 1 year of manufacturing experience or related technical education.

Education

High School Diploma or equivalent.
