Star Catcher in Jacksonville, FL, seeks an Optical Systems Engineer to support the Star Catcher Network. You will conduct research and design optical system concepts for space-to-space power beaming, ensuring manufacture, integration, test, verification, and mission operations meet service requirements.

The role involves hands-on engineering across design, analysis, testing, and collaboration with cross-functional teams to advance space-based power infrastructure.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Physics, Photonics or related field; Master’s or PhD preferred.
• Minimum five years of relevant experience in optical/laser systems design.
• Proven track record designing optical or laser systems for terrestrial or satellite applications.
• Experience in optical transmission system modeling, simulation, and trade-off analysis.

Responsibilities

• Designing and developing free space optical systems for power transmission between spacecraft.
• Conducting system architecture and design analysis for optical performance and reliability.
• Executing system performance modeling and simulation.
• Constructing prototypes and testbeds to validate models.
• Documenting system architecture and requirements at system and subsystem levels.
• Collaborating with multi-functional engineering teams.
• Facilitating testing, including lab and on-orbit tests.
• Developing tools to improve modeling of non-imaging optics and high-power propagation.
