Job summary
SETI Institute in Mountain View, CA is seeking an Optical Scientist to advance multi-star wavefront control for high-contrast imaging and exoplanet missions. The role focuses on innovative techniques and modeling for MSWC, with opportunities to contribute to other projects and collaborations with NASA Ames.
The successful candidate will have an MS or PhD in a relevant field, 1–4 years of lab experience, and strong coding skills in Python and MATLAB, plus proficiency with optical software tools
Qualifications
- MS or PhD in Optical Science, Astronomy, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related field.
- 1–4 years of experience setting up and conducting experiments in optical laboratories.
- Experience with high-contrast imaging / coronagraph laboratories is a plus.
- Experience with exoplanet science is a plus.
- Experience coding in Python, MATLAB, and/or other scientific languages.
- Experience with instruments and/or missions that have flown is a plus.
Responsibilities
- Innovate and invent techniques to improve performance and maturation of high-contrast imaging technologies.
- Computational modeling of instruments and missions (Python, MATLAB, etc.).
- Design and conduct laboratory experiments to characterize performance of high-contrast imaging systems.
- Write and contribute to scientific papers.
- Present results at scientific workshops and conferences.
- Write and contribute to grant proposals.
