Job summary

Corning Incorporated invites engineering students to join as a Summer 2027 intern in Concord, NC. You will work in a team to support technology development, improve manufacturing equipment, analyze data, and present findings.

Opportunities include housing travel assistance and meaningful project work with cross-functional teams. Applicants must be enrolled in BS/MS programs in Electrical/Mechanical/Materials/Chemical engineering, available for 10 weeks May-August 2027, and intend to pursue

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in an engineering program
  • Pursuing a BS/MS in Electrical/Mechanical/Materials/Chemical or related field
  • Full-time student actively enrolled with an expected graduation date Dec 2027 or later
  • Familiarity with engineering process fundamentals and scientific methodology

Responsibilities

  • Own key project objectives in a team environment
  • Interface with engineering and operations to assess impact of changes
  • Ensure clear communication to address concerns and obtain buy-in
  • Review performance data on new processes and draw conclusions
  • Communicate findings up to staff levels and above

Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry. This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Scope of Position

Support technology development by using engineering principles to improve manufacturing equipment and processes, improve products or to design, build, & evaluate prototypes. Analyze data to improve or develop product, process, or equipment improvements. Give recommendations for improvements, present findings, and document work. Actively engage with cross-functional project teams to solve problems efficiently and effectively with the objective of meeting project requirements.

Responsibilities
  • While participating in a team environment, own key project objectives critical to Corning’s success.
  • Interface with various engineering and operations groups to understand potential impact of product, equipment, and process changes.
  • Ensure communication is established to address concerns and obtain assistance/buy-in.
  • Review performance data on new processes/findings and effectively draw conclusions.
  • Communicate effectively to personnel at various levels up to and including the staff level.
Requirements
  • Enrolled in an Engineering program
  • Pursuing a BS/MS Electrical/Mechanical/Materials/Chemical or related engineering major
  • To be considered for an internship at Corning Incorporated, you must be actively enrolled at a college or university as a full-time student seeking a bachelor’s degree or higher.
  • Familiarity with engineering process fundamentals and scientific methodology (e.g. designing and using critical experiments to drive fundamental understanding)
  • Data/statistical analysis skills
  • Analytical problem-solving skills
  • Ability to build relationships, work in teams and interact with all levels of the organization
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to effectively present information
  • Results-oriented
  • Working knowledge or experience with design of experiments (DOE) concepts
  • Must be available for 10 weeks during Summer 2027 (May-August 2027) with a graduation date of December 2027 or later
  • Be interested in working for Corning, Inc after graduation, if presented with a full-time job opportunity.
