Job summary

AEG is seeking an Optical Consultant to support Optometrists and enhance patient care. You will perform preliminary evaluations, educate patients, and help manage records in the Electronic Health Records system while ensuring HIPAA compliance and smooth clinic operations.

Responsibilities include coordinating referrals, documenting medical findings, handling scheduling duties, and assisting with diagnostic tests and contact lens services as needed.

Qualifications

• High School or GED qualification.
• Strong attention to details and ability to work under pressure in fast paced environment.
• PC skills to include MC Office, Windows, and Word Processing.
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively and professionally collaborate with co-workers and patients.

Responsibilities

• Perform preliminary evaluations of patients prior to exam by the Optometrist, such as dilation, topicals, diagnostic medications, Optomap, auto reflector, visual acuity, etc.
• Conduct patient interviews prior to visits to determine medical issues and relay details to the Optometrist.
• Schedule referrals and handle paperwork for specialty visits as needed.
• Maintain patient records in compliance with HIPAA and company policies within EHR systems.
• Respond to patient inquiries regarding medications or treatment and assist the Optometrist as needed.
• Perform diagnostic testing with specialty equipment (OCT, Visual Field, Pachymetry, Retinal Camera, etc.).
• Handle CPT codes and post-op billing and other clerical duties related to medical documentation.
• Maximize schedule utilization via pre- and daily-appointment confirmations and recall outreach.
• Lead contact lens insertion/removal classes and manage contact lens inventory and orders.
• Complete end-of-day wrap-up tasks and keep the practice area clean and organized.
• May act as a scribe or assist with refractions as needed.
• Perform other duties as requested within the Practice.

About the role

At AEG, we believe great patient experiences begin with great teams. As an Optical Consultant, you'll work alongside the Optometrists to support all aspects of patient care and education, ensuring that patients receive exceptional care.

• Perform preliminary evaluations of patients prior to exam by the Optometrist, such as dilation, topicals, diagnostic medications, Optomap, auto reflector, visual acuity, etc.
• Performs verbal interview with patient prior to visit with Optometrist to determine medical issues and reasons for their visit to provide details to Optometrist.
• May be required to schedule referral appointments with Ophthalmologists, Diagnostic follow-up visits, and other specialty referrals, and complete paperwork.
• Records and maintains patient records / files in compliance with company, federal, and state policies (HIPAA).
• Responds to patient telephone inquiries regarding medication, treatment, problems referring to the Optometrist as necessary.
• May be required to perform diagnostic testing using specialty equipment (OCT, Visual Field, Pachymetry, Retinal Camera. Etc.).
• Documents medical findings and communication between Optometrist and patient in Electronic Health Records(EHR) and assist with clerical duties related to medical documentation (participating practices only). Checking CPT codes, billings for post op, office visit etc.
• Ensures that maximum schedule utilization occurs through pre-appointment confirmation, daily appointment confirmation, contacting patients from recall listings, contacting no-shows or canceled patients to reschedule.
• Performs contact lens insertion and removal classes (I&R) and manages the contact lens trial inventory, check-in and take contact lens orders in person or by phone.
• Performs end-of-day responsibilities to include opti-schedule wrap-up, end-of-day checklist, etc.
• Cleans and organizes frame boards, displays, mirrors, work bench, office area, maintaining overall cleanliness and visual appeal of the practice.
• May be asked to act as a scribe for the Optometrist or perform refractions.
• Performs other duties within the Practice as requested.
