Optical Coating Engineer

Job Summary and Essential Job Duties:

The Coating Engineer is responsible for analysis, investigation and solution of complex optical thin film manufacturing processes and equipment. Participates in the development design, presentation, documentation, specification and/or selection of equipment or processes. Assigned area of responsibility includes all aspects of optical thin film manufacturing, with primary emphasis on research and development of new product and processes as well as manufacturing support.

The Optical Coating Engineer will:
  • Perform Coating Process Development: Develop and implement procedures for cleaning and coating optics.
  • Perform Optical Product Development: Lead activities to develop new optical coatings to better meet customer spectral, mechanical and environmental requirements. The engineer will work on a wide range of applications from DUV to MIR.
  • Root Cause Analysis: Track yields and implement root cause corrective action plans for DMR items generated from the department.
  • Optimization: Suggest efficiency improvements for department.
  • Training: Guide and train optical coating technicians.
  • Performs miscellaneous duties as required by the managing staff.
Education Requirements:
  • Minimum 4‑year degree in Optics, Materials Science or other relevant engineering discipline.
Minimum Requirements:
  • Familiarity with optical thin film processes and design desired. Ability to excel in a fast‑paced work environment.
  • Well‑developed set of interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of traditional and current optical thin film coating technologies, processes, equipment including e‑beam, ion beam and magnetron sputtering.
  • Good mechanical aptitude including tooling and fixture design ability.
  • Good analytical and research skills.
  • Understanding of basic thin film coating theory.
  • Good presentation skills, written and oral. Work effectively with personal computers and a variety of software.
  • Able to schedule and prioritize multiple project activities.

Physical Demands:
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk and hear.
  • The job may involve prolonged periods of sitting/standing.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Requires good hand‑eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp.
Work Environment:
  • This position works in a manufacturing environment. The noise level can vary from quiet to loud frequencies.
  • May involve the use of oils and solvents.
  • Generally works in a clean environment and works to maintain the environment as such.
  • May require area‑specific safety training.
  • The employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes.
  • May be assigned to various production areas as needs require.
