Job summary

Atom Computing is seeking an Optical Assembly & Alignment Engineer to build and align optical breadboards and laser-delivery systems for neutral-atom quantum computers.

You will measure beam power, polarization, and coupling, troubleshoot misalignment, and help verify subsystem performance while recording measurements for system integration. This role requires hands-on optical skills and strong documentation discipline.

Qualifications

• BS in optics, optical engineering, physics, or related discipline; advanced degree preferred.
• 5+ years of hands-on optical assembly, free-space alignment, fiber coupling, and characterization.
• Experience building from controlled optical layouts and recording repeatable measurements.
• Experience with neutral-atom quantum-computer optics or precision scientific instrumentation preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assemble optical breadboards and optomechanical hardware from layouts and BOMs.
• Install and align lenses, mirrors, polarization optics, and fiber-coupling assemblies.
• Measure optical power, beam profile, polarization, and coupling performance; use wavefront measurements as required.
• Troubleshoot optical loss, clipping, alignment drift, and polarization errors; document findings and adjust as needed.
• Collaborate with Optical Bonding Technicians to verify alignment post-bond.
• Maintain optical cleanliness and safe handling of coatings and laser systems.
• Complete subsystem verification and maintain records for alignment and measurement.
• Learn first-of-a-kind methods and improve repeat-build alignment instructions with Manufacturing Engineering.
