Job summary

Florida Department of Health in Clay County is seeking a part-time WIC Counselor to support breastfeeding education and client care. You will counsel mothers, manage a caseload, and coordinate referrals to lactation consultants and nutritionists at various clinics.

The role requires flexibility to assist outside standard hours, strong communication and record-keeping skills, and the ability to lift up to 25 lbs. Travel within Clay County may be required.

Responsibilities

• Counsel women in the WIC clinic.
• Receive a caseload of WIC clients and make routine periodic contacts with all clients assigned.
• Provide basic breastfeeding information and support to new mothers, including benefits of breastfeeding and overcoming barriers.
• Be available outside usual hours to assist new mothers with breastfeeding problems.
• Keep client information confidential and maintain accurate records.
• Work in outlying clinics as assigned and refer mothers to appropriate WIC staff or services.
• Attend and assist with breastfeeding classes and staff meetings.
• Complete forms and training by deadlines.
• Assist WIC staff in promoting breastfeeding peer counseling.
• Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Your Specific Responsibilities:

• Part-time position 25-29 hours.
• Time sheet and EAR entry within the required time frame.
• Subject to emergency duty in the event of a natural disaster
• Completion of all mandatory or assigned trainings within the required time frame.
• Counsel women in the WIC clinic.
• Receive a caseload of WIC clients and make routine periodic contacts with all clients assigned.
• Give basic breastfeeding information and support to new mothers, including telling them about the benefits of breastfeeding, overcoming common barriers, and getting a good start with breastfeeding. She also helps mothers prevent and handle common breastfeeding concerns.
• Available outside usual 8 to 5 working hours to new mothers who are having breastfeeding problems.
• Respect each client by keeping her information strictly confidential.
• Keep accurate records of all contacts made with WIC clients.
• Work in outlying clinics as assigned.
• Refer mothers, according to clinic-established protocols, to the: WIC nutritionist or breastfeeding coordinator, lactation consultant, the mother’s physician or nurse, public health programs in the community, or social service agencies.
• Attend and assist with breastfeeding classes and breastfeeding support group as assigned.
• Attend & participates in monthly staff meetings, in-service trainings, other staff development activities and breastfeeding conferences/workshops as appropriate.
• Accurately complete all forms such as leave & attendance records, etc. by required deadlines 90% of the time.
• Read assigned books and materials on breastfeeding that are provided by the supervisor.
• Assist WIC staff in promoting breastfeeding peer counseling through special projects and duties as assigned.
• Other duties assigned by the supervisor.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Work approximately 25-29 hours per week.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Applications.
• Knowledge of States of Florida Personnel Rules and applicable Florida Statues.
• Ability to communicate effectively both in writing and orally.
• Ability to prepare accurate reports timely.

Qualifications:

Minimum –

• Must have exclusively breastfed a baby for at least 6 months in the last 5 years of less.
• Must be willing to travel within Clay County.
• Should not have one or more of the following credentials: Registered Nurse (RN), Registered Dietitian (RD), Licensed Dietitian/Nutritionist (LD/N), or International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC).
• Must be willing to be on-call at night or weekends (up to 9pm at night and weekends 9am to 9pm).
• Must be able to lift and carry a minimum of 25lbs over uneven ground unassisted.
• Must have a valid state driver’s license.

• Participant on the WIC program.
