Job Summary

Assists physicians in the ophthalmologic care and treatment of patients.

Responsibilities
  • Assists physicians with examinations, procedures, diagnostic studies, treatments, and dressings.
  • Compiles preliminary histories on new patients and records new problems, including all current medications, on return patients in EMR charting.
  • Scribes in the electronic medical record as dictated by physician.
  • Tests visual acuity, near and distant, and intraocular pressures.
  • Administers dilating agents for ophthalmic fundus examination upon successful completion of ophthalmic pharmacology exam.
  • Escorts patients to waiting area.
  • Performs ophthalmic testing: visual field testing, air tension testing, color vision testing, color sensitivity testing, automatic refractors, Retinomax, keratometry, lensometry, intraocular lens measurements, pachymetry, optical coherence tomography testing, photographic imaging, and corneal topography.
  • Assists physician with minor clinic surgery, special procedures, ophthalmic lavage, and preoperative preparation of patients.
  • Provides postoperative instructions when indicated.
  • Assists with and sets up laser treatments, including Argon, Krypton, and YAG lasers, ultrasound testing, and cryopexy surgery.
  • Performs ultrasound for measuring intraocular lens.
  • Completes calculations of findings and obtains keratometer readings.
  • Prepares cultures and pathology specimens for the laboratory and transports to correct areas.
  • Takes and records vital signs.
  • Cleans and prepares instruments and equipment, sends for repair or exchange.
  • Maintains examining rooms clean, orderly, and well stocked with supplies.
  • Assists with emergency admission of patients and ensures patient is properly transported to hospital unit.
  • Completes necessary charges for appliances, dressings, medications, special procedures, and testing for the patient.
  • Orders pharmaceuticals, linen, stock, stationery, surgical instruments, and other ophthalmic supplies for clinic.
Qualifications
  • Education: High School Diploma or Equivalent (GED) – required.
  • Certification(s) and License(s): (none specified).
