Job summary

UCSF Health seeks an experienced Ophthalmic Supervisor to lead clinical staff and oversee patient care delivery across assigned ophthalmology clinics. The role emphasizes quality, regulatory compliance, and cross-disciplinary coordination.

The candidate will supervise technicians, mentor staff, and participate in HR decisions while ensuring efficient operations and adherence to Joint Commission standards in a high-volume academic setting.

Qualifications

• Two years of leadership experience.
• Demonstrated skills to effectively supervise technicians and to manage the complex workflow and multiple priorities involved with a clinic(s) / center(s). Strong knowledge of practice operations.
• In depth knowledge of patient care clinical standards and care delivery, systems, external regulations, and internal policies.
• Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to quickly analyze problems, determine appropriate level of intervention, and develop and apply effective solutions.
• Strong interpersonal skills for effective collaborations and problem solving with all levels of management, staff, consultants, and outside agencies.
• Strong written and verbal communications skills, with the ability to train and mentor subordinates, and to convey complex clinical and technical information in a clear and concise manner.
• Minimum 4 years’ experience as an Ophthalmic Technician.
• Previous supervisory experience in Academic or Large clinical practice.
• Knowledge of Joint Commission requirements.
• The ability to work with intermittent standing and sitting for 8-9 hours.

Responsibilities

• Supervises and facilitates the flow of patient care activities and coordination of the interdisciplinary clinical staff for assigned clinics / centers. Ensures quality care and compliance with policies and regulations.
• Supervises the quality of employees meeting patient service standards and coordinates clinic patient care services, resolves system issues, advises on work methods, manages scheduling based on patient census, and mentors staff.
• Evaluates subordinate staff and participates in hiring, salary actions, disciplinary actions, performance ratings, and other human resources matters.
• Assures completion of orientation and training of all patient care staff and identifies educational opportunities in collaboration with ambulatory administration.
• Serves as a resource to clinic staff on patient care issues, new policies and technology; communicates changes and resolves escalated issues.
• Participates in routine audits, accreditation, and licensing inspection readiness activities and improves utilization and efficiency.
• Promotes teamwork and communicates with management on practice activities and HR issues.
• Encourages staff in professional growth and develops strategies for performance improvement.
• Monitors fiscal and material resources within budgetary parameters for assigned clinics.
• Educates staff on cost-containment strategies and budget adherence.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities

• 50% Yes Supervises and facilitates the flow of patient care activities and coordination of the interdisciplinary clinical staff for assigned clinics / centers. Assures quality care and compliance with internal policy, external regulations and accepted practices across the continuum of care. May also supervise the fiscal and administrative operations. Supports physicians in clinic modeling high quality technical expertise in patient work ups and procedures as well as non-invasive imaging and diagnostic testing as needed across all sites.
• 15% Yes Supervises the quality of employees meeting patient service standards and coordinates the clinic patient care services, resolves system issues, advises on work methods, manages scheduling based on patient census, and ensures compliance with internal procedures and external regulations. Mentors staff to communicate with patients regarding their conditions, treatments, and concerns.
• 10% Yes Evaluates subordinate staff and participates in decision-making on hiring, salary actions, disciplinary actions, performance ratings, and other human resources matters. Evaluates the competencies of clinical staff, according to scope of practice for the position.
• 5% Yes Assures completion of orientation and training of all patient care staff. Identifies and implements department specific educational opportunities for staff in collaboration with ambulatory administration. Assure work is performed in adherence to patient service standards, internal policies, external regulations, and quality / quantity expectations.
• 5% Yes Serves as a resource to clinic staff / Directors on patient care issues, new policies, and technology. Keeps staff informed of changes and resolves escalated issues. Recommends internal policies and procedures for quality improvement within the practice(s). May serves as a resource to staff for instructing patients on chronic diseases and self-care management, and with diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and treatments.
• 5% Yes Participates in the performance of routine audits, accreditation, and licensing inspection readiness activities. Monitors services provided by support departments and collaborates to improve utilization and efficiency.
• 2% Yes Promotes a climate of effective teamwork, communication, and collaboration. Communicates regularly with management on practice activities and on pertinent operational or human resources issues.
• 2% Yes Encourages and assists staff in meeting professional goals using standard practice evaluation tools to identify areas for growth. Consults with clinical leaders and educators on developing, implementing, and evaluating strategies for performance improvement.
• 2% Yes Monitors and ensures that fiscal and material resources are managed according to budgetary parameters across assigned clinic(s) or centre(s).

Education, Licenses and Certifications:

• Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent combination of experience / training
• Certified Ophthalmic Assistant ( COA) from IJCAHPO
• Current American Heart Association BLS certification

Preferred

• Certified Ophthalmic Technician ( COT) from IJCAHPO
• Ophthalmic Photographers Society – Certified Retinal Angiographer ( CRA)
• Ophthalmic Photographers Society – Optical Coherence Tomography Certification ( OCT-C)
