Job summary

Jobtailor in Richmond, VA is seeking an Ophthalmic Medical Assistant to support ophthalmology services. You will prepare patients, assist during exams and procedures, and manage EMR data entry using EPIC.

Qualifications

• 1+ year of experience performing initial examinations and diagnostic testing in optometry/ophthalmology.
• 2+ years in ophthalmology performing initial examinations and diagnostic testing (preferred).
• CMA certification preferred.
• Academic health care environment experience preferred.
• Complete AA Ophthalmic Medical Assisting course within 12 months of hire for continued employment.
• Obtain COA within 24 months of hire date.

Responsibilities

• Prepare patients for examinations and preliminary exams with the Attending Physician.
• Prepare examination and treatment rooms.
• Perform vision screening examinations.
• Administer eye medications.
• Clean and maintain ophthalmic instruments.
• Assist physicians during minor surgical and laser procedures.
• Record information in the EMR (EPIC) system.
• Perform slit lamp examinations to check eye condition.
• Dilate pupils to prepare patients for ophthalmology examinations.

Responsibilities

• Prepares the patient to see the Attending Physician (preliminary exam, medical history, & testing)
• Prepares examination and treatment rooms
• Performs basic and routine vision screening examinations
• Administers eye medications
• Cleans and maintains ophthalmic instruments
• Assists physicians during minor surgical and laser procedures
• Accurately records all information in EMR (EPIC) system
• Checks condition of patients' eyes by performing slit lamp examination
• Prepares patients for ophthalmology examination by dilating pupils
• Secures patient information and maintains patient confidence by completing and safeguarding medical records
• Keeps equipment operating by following operating instructions

Requirements

• Minimum of one (1) year of work experience in optometric/ophthalmology performing initial examinations and diagnostic testing
• Minimum of two (2) years of work experience in ophthalmology performing initial examinations and diagnostic testing (preferred)
• Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) (preferred)
• Previous experience in an academic health care environment (preferred)
• Successful completion of the American Academy of Ophthalmology Ophthalmic Medial Assisting Course within 12 months for continued employment
• Obtain Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) by the Joint Commission of Allied Health Personnel (JCAHPO) within twenty-four (24) months of hire date
