Job description

Overview

The Bascom Palmer Eye Institute is seeking a full-time Ophthalmic Technician 1 to work in Miami. The OT1 is competent in the theory, principles, and practice of eye care and performs appropriate clinical testing in compliance with department standards and documents in the EMR system.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Performs and documents items in the electronic medical record, including: Reason for visit, Chief complaint, History of present illness, Basic ocular motility, Ocular surface assessment, Review systemic and ocular medications, Eye drop administration, Record allergies, Intraocular pressure (Goldman, Tono-Pen, I-Care), Pharmacy information, Pachymetry, Family, social, medical, and ocular history, Insertion and removal of hard & soft contact lenses, Visual acuity at distance and near, Color vision test, Lensometry, Stereopsis test, Manual refraction, Sensorimotor exam, Confrontational fields, Automated & manual perimetry, Humphrey visual fields, Virtual Reality (VR) visual fields.
  • Provides support to providers including documentation in patient charts as required and directed for patient care.
  • Provides patient-centric care.
  • Adheres to University of Miami policies, standards, values, and required training; complies with regulations and maintains patient confidentiality.
  • Follows best practices of patient safety, hand hygiene, and infection control.
  • Attends educational courses for ophthalmic personnel when assigned.
  • Demonstrates high quality of work through accuracy, timeliness, professionalism, and thoroughness.
  • Meets daily productivity goals and ensures all equipment is calibrated and in proper working order.
  • Participates in assigned clinical research and maintains required certifications.
  • Organizes and stocks rooms for daily clinical activities.
  • Travels to satellite eye centers when necessary.
  • Works evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Performs organizational duties as assigned.
  • Completes intravitreal injection (IVI) prep for patients.
  • Facilitates motility exams.
  • Supports Virtual Care encounters and exams.
  • Supports and conducts motility and related examinations as needed.
Qualifications
  • Education: High School diploma or equivalent
  • Certification and Licensing: Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA)
  • Experience: Two years of relevant experience
