Job summary

Outlook Eyecare, Monroe Twp., NJ (part of Prism Vision Group), is seeking an experienced Ophthalmic Assistant for an onsite role. You will support physicians with testing, chart review, and patient coaching.

Qualified candidates have 4–6 years of ophthalmic assistant experience, certification as Ophthalmic Assistant, and proficiency with EMR systems including Athena PMS. The position emphasizes accuracy, empathy, and teamwork in a busy clinical setting.

Qualifications

  • GED or high school diploma; bachelor's preferred.
  • Certified Ophthalmic Assistant.
  • 4–6 years ophthalmic assistant experience.

Responsibilities

  • Take ocular and systemic history and record visual acuity.
  • Review charts and perform testing as scheduled.
  • Act as a scribe entering data into EMR.
  • Perform lensometry, refractometry, slit lamp and tonometry tests.
  • Administer diagnostic tests including OCT and visual fields.
  • Perform manifest refraction.
  • Assist with in‑office procedures and obtain informed consent.
  • Assist in training ophthalmic assistants.
  • Assist with patient education.
  • Maintain exam rooms' cleanliness and orderliness.
  • Comply with procedures, regulations, and report errors.

Job description

This onsite role is located at Outlook Eyecare, Monroe Twp., NJ, which is part of Prism Vision Group. There will be occasional travel to other locations based upon business needs.

Compensation Range: $18.00 - $35.27/hr (Dependent on Experience)

Key Responsibilities
  • Take an ocular and systemic history and accurately record visual acuity.
  • Review patient chart to ensure completeness and accuracy of information. Perform testing required by type of exam scheduled, patient complaint, and history.
  • Act as a scribe while physician examines patient, entering data into electronic medical records.
  • Perform lensometry, automated refractometry, slit lamp examination including applanation tonometry, anterior chamber angle assessment, gross external exam, ocular muscle motility and balance testing, assess pupils and confrontation visual fields.
  • Administer diagnostic tests – OCT, automated visual fields, photography, pachymetry, biometry.
  • Perform manifest refraction.
  • Administer topical ophthalmic or oral medications.
  • Assist with in‑office procedures, ensuring proper informed consent is obtained and setting up and cleaning from procedures.
  • Assist in training other ophthalmic assistants.
  • Assist with patient education.
  • Maintain cleanliness and orderliness of exam rooms during the work day.
  • Comply with all practice procedures and protocols, state and federal regulations, and report potential or suspected errors to supervisor or Compliance Officer.
  • Maintain a positive attitude characterized by cooperation, self‑motivation, courtesy, and professionalism.
Qualifications

Education: High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED). Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline highly preferred.

Certificates and Licenses: Certified Ophthalmic Assistant.

Experience: 4-6 years of prior ophthalmic assistant experience.

Work Environment
  • Office environment with a controlled atmosphere. Possible exposure to staff or patients with communicable diseases and blood‑borne pathogens.
Other Physical Requirements
  • Vision (Near, Distance, Color, Peripheral, Depth Perception)
  • Sense of Sound (normal range of hearing and vision)
  • Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as gloves, face mask, eye shield, gown.
