  • Operate refracting station and support physician with tests.
  • Assist with new technologies and physician-specific tasks.

JOB SUMMARY: Provide exceptional patient centered ophthalmic surgical care in a clinical setting

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
1. High school diploma; some college or Medical Assisting preferred
2. Two to five years experience as a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant preferred
3. Valid CPR certification preferred; will train

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
1. Demonstrated, advanced comprehension of the ophthalmic assistant skills as outlined by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) as well as a basic understanding of optics and the ability to perform refractometry.
2. Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
3. Personable and empathetic with patient’s needs and concerns.
4. Well-organized with attention to detail.
5. Ability to work as a team member.
6. Demonstrated comprehension of the principles of optics and refraction.
7. Demonstrated computer literacy.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Communication and Patient Care
a. Acquaint all new patients with office procedures to which they will be exposed. Inform patients of the purpose of all tests personally performed and how the patient will be affected during the tests.

  1. Obtain patient history to include chief complaint, history of present illness, past history (ocular and general), family history (ocular and general), and history of allergies and medications.
    c. Performs accurate and consistent documentation and measurement tasks to include:
    Visual Acuity
    Lensometry
    Confrontational Visual Fields
    Evaluation of Motility
    Pupillary Function Tests
    Color Plates
    Applanation Tonometry
    Refractometry
    Angle Assessment
    Dilation of Pupils
    Visual Field Testing
    Optic Nerve and Retinal Scanning ( OCT )
    Pachymetry
    Corneal Topography
    OPD

Epic Refracting station

Other tasks specific to the physician’s needs as a result of new technologies

Job Type: Full-time 32 FTE, with potential for 40 FTE

Physical/Mental Demands: Requires sitting and standing associated with a normal office environment.

Environmental/Working Conditions: Normal office environment.
